George Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff George Gottlieb Pfaff (Poff)
The Clausthal Parish Register indicates that Gottlieb's father Zacharias died in 1747. It is unknown if his Mother was still alive or if any of his siblings were still living. According to Jen Mueller-Joppe, several of his siblings may have died very early in life and George may have been one of a few surviving children.
According to the late historian Klaus Wust, there were a large contingent of convicts (41) on the Queen of Denmark from the Hamburg workhouse and jails that were deported by order of the Hamburg Senate (city government). In the Hannover State Archives, Fach 154, Nr. 2, it was noted that George Gottlieb was a "Semmeljunge" (spoiled child), was delivered to the English ship Queen of Denmark July 25, 1752 for the destination of South Carolina from Hamburg. Maybe George was an orphan in Clausthal and considered to be economically undesirable in Clausthal and Hamburg. When Jen reviewed the listing of the passengers on the Queen, many were from Clausthal, had been employed in the mining profession and had chose to emigrate rather than be deported and put on the ship by the local authorities. When I reviewed the listing of the passengers most of the people were in their twenties.
The town of Clausthal is now referred to as the municipality of Clausthal-Zellerfield which is part of the Oberharz Municipal Association, in the District of Goslar, State of Lower Saxony, the country of Republic of Germany.3 He was born circa 1734 at Clausthal, Hannover Territory, Lower Saxony, Germany.4 He immigrated on November 3, 1752 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sailed from Hamburg on the English ship "Queen of Denmark."4 He married Esther Margaretha Unknown before 1760.4 George Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff married Catharina Margaretha Griesbach on December 31, 1760 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.2,4 George Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff Renting 7 acres and paid a tax of 2 shillings in 1769 at Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.4 He began military service in 1777 Godlip Poff, Private 5th Class, Fourth Company, 10th Batallion of Lancaster County Militia, commanded by Colonel David Jenkins.4 He Paid a tax of 3 pounds 10 shillings on August 20, 1777 at Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.4 He Paid a tax of 6 in 1780 at Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.
