Sally Gordon Petty1,2,3

F, b. July 28, 1913, d. July 9, 2007
Her Social Security Number was 224-09-0472.4 Sally Gordon Petty was buried at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida.2,5 She was born on July 28, 1913 at Roanoke, Virginia.4,2,5 She married Leon Ernest Elmore, son of Arthur Washington Elmore and Lettie Mae Pedigo, on April 1, 1937 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,6,3 As of April 1, 1937,her married name was Elmore. Sally Gordon Petty died on July 9, 2007 at Florida at age 93.4,2,5 She Sally Elmore, widow of Leon E. Elmore, precious mother, beloved grandmother, joyous great-grandmother, died Monday, July 9, 2007, at the age of 94 years. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, on July 28, 1913, she was the third child of Abner and Sallie Petty. Sally graduated from Jefferson High School, ahead of her class at the age of 16 years. She then graduated from National Business College and, while single, worked as a legal secretary to Earl Fitzpatrick, Esq. After her marriage, she worked as a home maker, wife, and mother extraordinnaire. She married Leon E. Elmore, also of Roanoke, on April 1, 1937, and they made their home together there. She always and often said that he was the only man she would ever love. She was a member of Greene Memorial Methodist Church, Roanoke, Virginia, until she moved with her husband and children to Jacksonville, Florida. Sally was a devoted wife and mother, who assisted her husband in his work until he died. Upon moving to Jacksonville, she transferred her membership to Riverside Park United Methodist Church, where she served and worshiped her Lord for 56 years. She taught Toddler Sunday School for over 50 years at Riverside Park, teaching several generations of church families, including her grandson, Raymond Wheeldon, and granddaughter, Sally-Gordon Lane, and guiding them to know that God is Love. She was an active member of UMW Circle, The Friday Musicale, and Ginger Garden Club. She loved children and music and was accomplished in piano and organ. She was a room mother countless years for her three children and always an active member of the PTA. She and Leon opened their home for hours, days, months, and on one occasion, over a year to young people who needed guidance, support, and a home. After Leon's death in 1981, Sally bravely gathered up the remainder of her life and began again. She missed him every day and talked of him even on the day of her death. She joined Bible Study Fellowship and a quilting group, making many new friends. She became even more active in her church and Garden Club, where she held the office of Treasurer for many years. She crocheted hundreds of baby caps and blankets for premature babies at local hospitals. She learned to translate textbooks and literature into braille and was a member of The Temple Sisterhood Braille Group at Congregation Ahavath Chesed. The school books and literature that she translated and typed into braille are still being used by young people today. Sally was predeceased by her husband, parents, her sister MaryLinn Petty Fitzpatrick, her brother, William Abner Petty, and her niece, Carolyn Petty Agner. An older sister, Virginia Louise Petty, survives her in Roanoke, Virginia. She leaves to treasure her life and memory her children, Sally Jane and Lathan Varnadoe, James Gordon and Jane Elmore, and Lynn and Ray Wheeldon. She is also survived by her grandchildren, to whom she gave her whole heart: John L. Kear, Jr., and his wife, Ana, Elizabeth and Tom Lamb, Raymond G. Wheeldon, Jr. and Dagny Ulrich, and Sally-Gordon and Casey Lane. The greatest blessing of her last two years is her great- granddaughter, Maren Lynn Lane, whom she absolutely adored. She is also survived and was loved dearly by her nephews, Thomas Linn Fitzpatrick and William Allen Petty, and her niece, Mary Fitzpatrick Critcher, and several great nieces and great nephews. Memorial services for Sally will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Riverside Park United Methodist Church, the Reverend Jimmy Jones officiating.
