Mrs. Graham was born May 4, 1912 in Roanoke, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Graham, Sr., who passed away in 1960. Over her lifetime Mrs. Graham lived in Roanoke and Lynchburg, Virginia, and in Asheville and Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Everette and Margaret Chatham Elmore in Roanoke, Virginia, and the sister of Mary, Juanita, Everette and Walter. She was employed by Park Street Pharmacy and Woolworth's Department Store in Roanoke, and later by Mercy Hospital in Charlotte as a switchboard operator. She had a great love of flowers, with a special green thumb touch, and a fondness of animals. Mrs. Graham was the loving mother of her daughter, Sue Graham Bell, of Charlotte, NC, and of her son, Eugene Graham, Jr. of Asheville, NC. She leaves four grandchildren, Eddie, Stephen, Rebecca and Jennifer, along with nine great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kathryn, Andrew, Christian, Addison, Mason, Harrison, Matthew and Rachael. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2003 at the Lackey Chapel of Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Road, Charlotte. A reception will be held following the service at the church.      James W. Going Rozier Dedwylder made a study of the personal property tax records of Amherst County and found that James Going, Sr. and James Going, Jr. were list on the 1850 tax rolls. Only James Going, Sr. appeared in 1851. It is suggested that by Cubert Thomas Wood of Columbia, Tennessee that James W. Going died during 1850 and that his brother, Samuel Going, assumed his family. The household of Samuel Going and Gabriella Skinner Going were enumerated in the 1850 census of Nelson County, adjacent to that of his father. Samuel Going is regarded as the brother-in-law of Gabriella Skinner Going by Rozier Dedwylder. Perhaps Samuel and James are really the same person.      Elihu Levi Pigg was buried at Coal City Cemetery, Coal City, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.^3,5,7 He Elihu Levi Pigg was born February 9, 1878 in Bateman, Virginia Patrick County under the Blue Ridge Mountains on the headwaters of Little Dan River. The poorest farm I most ever saw. I was raised by very poor parents and they could hardly live at all.
A few months after I was born, my father lost his mind. My mother left with six small children to raise and did not have any help. My father turned real bad (in) that he tried to kill my mother. Finally he was sent to the Insane Hospital and stayed two years. When he came back he was worse than what he was, so at the age of two years old we moved to Floyd County, Virginia. My mother's people lived there in 1881.
This was the year that was known as the driest in the history of Virginia. After that was hardships. We moved back to Patrick County Virginia. We went back to the old home. I can't recall what happened in the few years after our journey.
The time had come when I had to go and work, for my parents were very poor. With their consent in 1895, I went to Atlas, where my Uncle Bill Pigg was staying; which was about 18 miles from Danville, Virginia. In 1896 I stayed and worked on the farm with my brother-in-law, J. Fletcher Mills, which was five miles from my home. The next year, 1897, I went to the Pocahontas Coal Field; to work on a farm, but things did not work out. I went back home again. In 1898, I went and tried again with my brother-in-law, but things (still) did not work out. In 1899 I worked and made a crop on the farm with Mr. Mills, which was just a short distance from home. Again things did not turn out to my advantage.
The following year I felt my fortune was going to happen so I decided to travel West. I did not go alone, for seven adults and several children came along. We got on the train at Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, and would be arriving (at) Rocky Ford, Colorado. This was the year 1900.
June of 1903 I left Colorado for my native home.
In January of 1904, I started for the coal fields. I went to McComas, West Virginia. On January 18, 1904, I got a job working on building coke ovens. The weather was treacherous and rough, so I had to quit. In a few days I got another job working on a rock dam, but then the cold took that job away. Again I was out of work. In a few days I got a job in the mines loading coal, so therefore I was pleased with myself. I was sure of keeping this job, for the weather didn't bother me because I worked inside.
I had trouble getting the coal down, but I didn't have any trouble loading it after I got it down. Everything was going good until March of 1906. In this period I received a message from home. It contained news of my sister Rosie. It said that if I wished to see my sister I must be home at once because my sister was dying. I got on the next train that left for home. I had found my sister very sick. She had begun to lose her mind. We did everything we could for her but eventually she had to be taken to the hospital in Marion, VA. Later at my station at the mines when I received a message that my father was not expected to live. When I got home, my father was very sick and he died on April 6, 1906. Three days later my sister died.
On the date of April 24, 1906, I went back to the coalfields. On December 23, 1906 I was married to Miss Lena Gillenwater, in North Tazewell. We bought a little home in McComas. We remained there until my wife passed away.
In 1912, I hurt my hip in the coal mines and was laid up for awhile. I became ill with rheumatism as a result of the accident. When I got a little better, D. H. Conner and I bought out a stock of goods from W.M. Smith near Giatto. I moved there in the fall of 1913 and stayed until January 1, 1915.
I knew that our business was heading for a downfall. We decided the best thing to do was to dissolve our partnership. I then decided to move to Matoaka. I sold my goods and groceries for a few months before moving back to McComas. After moving back to McComas I still sold groceries and other merchandise.
The following year I built a small store house and everything went along well. We had twin boys that got along very well until the babies were about five months old. One of the twins took spinal meningitis and he didn't live but a short time. Everything went very well until November 9, 1919, my wife died. My home was really torn up as my wife had given birth to nine children; two dead, seven living that were all very small. The oldest only being ten years old.
On December 1, 1920 I married Miss Jennie East.⁸ He was born on February 9, 1878 at Bateman, Patrick Co., Virginia; His gravestone has a birth year of 1879 and spells his first name as "Elihue."^1,3,4,5,7 He married Lena Gillenwater on December 23, 1906 at North Tazwell, Tazewell Co., Virginia.^1,2 Elihu Levi Pigg married Virginia Lin "Jennie" East on December 1, 1920 at Bramwell, Mercer Co., West Virginia.^1,2,9 Elihu Levi Pigg died on January 9, 1943 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 64.^5,7

     John B. Terry John Terry was a Revolutionary War soldier. He volunteered in the spring of 1778, and served three and one-half months as a Private in Captain John Donaldson's Company, and was discharged in August 1778. In 1779 he was drafted in the Pittsylvania County Militia; length of time not stated. In 1781 he served as Ensign in the first regiment of General Stevens' Brigade and was discharged by Captain John Morton, April 2, 1781. Minister's returns of Rev. Lazarus Dodson on record in Pittsylvania County Clerk's Office reads: "Memorandum of marriage between John Terry and Sarah Hodnett the 3rd day of December 1782. Marred by Lazarus Dodson." John Terry was a Presbyterian minister, with the privilege to marry, which seemed to have been a rare honor at that time. The family was quite wealthy as wealth was considered in those days. The Terry's plantation was very extensive; they owned many slaves and a great deal of land. At one time the State of Virginia was divided up into smaller counties and it was found that all but a very small corner of Pittsylvania County was owned by Terrys. Unfortunately, the Terrys were always "land poor." John Terry's estate was valued at about $17,000. The 1810 U.S. Census lists John Terry in Rockingham County, Virginia. Those listed in the household were: 1 Free white male, 45 years and up. 1 Free white female, 45 years and up.¹ He was born on January 16, 1760 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.¹ He married Sarah "Sally" Hodnett, daughter of Ayres Hodnett Sr. and Mary McGhee, on December 3, 1782 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.^1,4,5 John B.      Charles McLaughlin Sr. married Sarah Terry, daughter of Henry Terry and Margaret Unknown.¹ Charles McLaughlin Sr. was born circa 1750 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.³ He List of Participants in Dunmore's War 1774: Charles McLaughlin in 1774 at Virginia.² He Served as Regiment of Artillery with the Continental Troops in March, 1780.⁴ He died before September 16, 1811 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. He left a will on September 16, 1811 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; The will of Charles McLaughlin, Sr., dated Feb 10, 1810 and probated Sep 16, 1811 gives his land to sons Henry and Charles. To daughter Patience he gives her choice of bed and furniture, a mare and saddle, chest and one cow. To daughter Polly, he gives bed and furniture, a cow and a calf. To daughter Sarah, he gives a bed and furniture, a cow and calf, a saddle and wheel. Sons Henry and Charles were appointed executors. Witnesses were David Terry, Barton Terry, Sr., and Moses Terry.

     Sarah Terry married Charles McLaughlin Sr.¹ Her married name was McLaughlin. Sarah Terry was born circa 1760. She died before 1811.

     Sarah "Sally" Hodnett was born on March 13, 1765 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.^1,2 She married John B. Terry, son of David C. Terry and Elizabeth Luck, on December 3, 1782 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.^1,3,4 As of December 3, 1782,her married name was Terry.³ Sarah "Sally" Hodnett died before 1845 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.⁴

     David C. Terry was born circa 1738/39 at Halifax Co., Virginia.⁴ He married Elizabeth Luck in 1759 at Halifax Co., Virginia.^4,1 David C. Forth: I give to my daughter, Anna Barksdale, one Negro woman named "Ziller" and one mulatto girl named "Anna" to her and her heirs forever, and also one mulatto woman "Sarah Martin" for the term 6 yrs. and then she is to go free, but if she should have children, they shall remain and belong to the said Anna Barksdale and her heirs forever. Fifth: I lend to my daughter, Lucy Williams, one Negro boy named "Abram" during her natural life and then after her death to her younger son, Dr. Crawford Williams and his heirs forever.
