Ray was a WWII veteran; serving in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 on the carrier USS Guadalcanal CVE-60 and took part in the capture of the German submarine U505. He was the owner and operator of Howell's Electric Motor Repair and Well Drilling of Bedford. Ray was active in the Bedford community; a member of Bedford Christian Church, Bedford Lion's Club, founding and continued member for 50 years of the Little Switzerland Hunt Club, a Boy Scout leader, a former Elk, and former President of the Bedford Country Club. In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Howell and James Howell, and sisters, Lucille Howell and Catherine Cook. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Oneeda Underwood Howell; son, Stephen Lee Howell and wife, Regina of Union Bridge, MD; daughter, Dana Howell Tuck and husband, David of Forest; grandchildren, Jason Jones and wife, Beth, Jody Jones and wife, Christy, Jessica Roberts and husband, Andy, Adam Howell, Samantha Howell, Sierra Howell; five great-grandchildren. Ray is also survived by his brother Paul Howell and wife, Sandra of Bedford and sister-in-law, Glenna Lee and husband, Claude of Vinton, and numerous nieces and nephews. on July 31, 2012.2

Lee, 84, of Vinton, Va., went to his eternal home in Heaven on Friday, November 25, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest E. Lee and Zelma Lee; infant son, Todd Kevin Lee; and sisters, Rachel Lee and Juanita Mayhew. Claude is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Glenna Underwood Lee; brother-in-law, James Mayhew; nephews, Philip (Tony) Mayhew and his wife, Susan, and Jeffrey Mayhew and his wife, Terri; and sister-in-law, Oneeda Howell of Lynchburg. Claude retired from Roanoke County in 1997 and was a long-time member of Belmont Christian Church where he served in numerous positions. He also served in the United States Army where he was stationed in Korea. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the entire staff of Brookdale Memory Care and to the staff of Amedisys Hospice Care for the attention and love shown to Claude during this difficult time. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park with Military Honors. on November 27, 2016.3

He loved gardening, fishing, camping in his motor home, and visiting with his family and friends. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and Oddfellas, Salem Lodge 100 for over 60 years. Thanks to Medi-Home Health and Hospice Staff for their special care and kindness for Clarence and family during his recent illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, at Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Everett Kier officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Lotz Funeral Home Salem. on June 19, 2013.3
