Born Oct. 17, 1910, in Ashe County, N.N., he was a son of the late John and Rosa Barker Sexton. He was a retired coal miner and minister, member of the United Mine Workers of America and the Wesleyan Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hester Nutter Sexton; four sons, Paul Daniel of Rives Junction, Mich., Russell Lee and Marvin Edward, both of Jackson, Mich., and Roger Dale of Daniels; four daughters, Mrs. Anna Mae Duty and Mrs. Ester Ruth Weber, both of Rives Junction, Mrs. Doris Marie Rupert of Lennon, Mich., and Mrs. Sandra Kay Hankins of Sterling, Mich; two brothers, Fayetteville and Arnold of Jackson, Mich; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Rosella Goss of Jackson, Mich., Mrs. Della Epperly of Fayetteville and Miss Emma Sexton of Logan; 21 grandchildren a one great-grandson. on April 26, 1977.1

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He retired as a truck driver from New River/Pocahontas Coal Company and then worked 15 years as a bus driver for Fayette County Board of Education. Mr. Conner was a member of American Legion Post 149. Fayetteville. He enjoyed working on automobiles, as well as hunting and fishing. Besides his wife, Ella Frances Sexton Conner, he was preceded in death by his son, Harold Gene Conner; grandson, Randy Conner; sister, Willa Rose Lough; and brothers, Joel Conner and Cletis Conner. Left to cherish his memory include his son, Randall Conner and wife, Pat, of Fayettevillle; one grandson, Stephen Conner and wife, Kandis, of Murfreesboro, Tenn; two granddaughters, Melissa Neel and husband, John, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Gina Davenport and husband, Kyle, of Smyrna, Tenn; one brother, Don Conner and wife, Marilyn, of Mich; sister-inlaws, Ann Conner and Helen Jones; brother-in-law, Willard Sexton; seven great-grandchildren, Chelsea Hogencamp and husband, Derek, Holly Conner, P.J. Conner, Alexander Conner, Holly Neel, Zachary Davenport and Emma Davenport; one great-great-granddaughter, Mayla Conner; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 3110 and American Legion Post 149. on February 10, 2009.3

Known by many names, Addie, Nannie, Shorty, Ann B, Annie, Nana, Nan, Aunt Nannie, Mamma, and Mom, she loved taking care of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Her hobbies were pitching horseshoes, sewing, card playing, cooking and most of all church work. Ann was proudly a Christian and a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church for 60 some years where she served as choir director, music committee member and chair, Sunday School teacher, Awana Coach, and financial secretary. Ann was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Joel Conner, her parents Douglas and Ethel Lowe, brothers Berkley Lowe, Edward Lowe, Doug Lowe, and Rev. James Lowe. Ann is survived by: a brother, Rev. Donald A. Lowe; a sister, Ruth Loving; and a sister-in-law Rita Lowe; all of Beckley; her daughter, Jo Ellen Conner Dangerfield, grandson Joseph Dangerfield, (Ami), and their children Conner, Piper and Jillian; granddaughter Anna Dangerfield Frost and grandson, Noah; her daughter, Cathy Conner Young, husband Ralph, grandsons Clint Young (Jackie Smith), Joel Young (Tiffany Garrison) and their son, Christian, and granddaughter, Ashton Young; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends with whom she remained in contact. Burial will be at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. on September 11, 2014.3

He came to Roanoke in 1882 when the Shenandoah Valley railway was being built and was employed as a conductor until 1885 when he went to Kansas. He was a conductor on the Norfolk and Western from 1891 until twelve years ago when he was retired because of ill health. on June 11, 1925.2
