She is survived by three sisters, Virginia Hawes of Roanoke, Va., Margie Drumheller and her husband, John of Lynchburg, Va., and Katherine Elder and her husband, George of Buena Vista, Va. and Robert Sumpter and his wife, Freda of Durham, N.C. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Burial will follow at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd, Va. on March 7, 2002.1

     Marjorie Grace "Margie" Sumpter Marjorie Grace Sumpter Drumheller, 94, of Lynchburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of Tuesday, December 24, 2015, after a long illness. Marjorie was born in the town of Floyd, Virginia, in the summer of 1921 (July 18). She was one of 11 children born to James Hardy Sumpter Sr. and Addie Harmon Sumpter. Marjorie graduated from Floyd County High School in Floyd, Virginia before attending the Virginia Baptist School of Nursing in Lynchburg, Virginia. After graduating from nursing school in 1944 she was one of the first nurse volunteers to help with the polio epidemic in Mississippi. Marjorie loved nursing and her patients loved her. After a brief move to Texas in the 1950's Marjorie returned to Lynchburg and continued her nursing career as the Head Nurse in the Labor and Delivery Room at Lynchburg General Hospital. When Lynchburg General merged with Virginia Baptist Hospital Marjorie continued her love of delivering babies at Virginia Baptist Hospital until her retirement. Marjorie was very proud to represent the third district to the 77th Annual Virginia Nurses Association convention. Marjorie's biggest love in life was serving her family. She dearly loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cared for, loved and prayed over all of us with a passion only a mother could have. While no longer here she still watches over us. Church life and faith were very important to Marjorie. She was a dedicated and active member of Beulah Baptist Church for 55 years. Attendance was mandatory whenever the doors were open. She was excited to be asked to represent her church and attend the Southern Baptist Convention as a voting delegate.Marjorie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, John Quentin Drumheller in 2011. Marjorie was also preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. Marjorie leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her brother, Robert M. Sumpter of Raleigh, N.C; her children, Ann Quentin Drumheller Mann and her husband, James of Lynchburg, Va., and Robert Sumpter Drumheller of Snellville, Ga; her grandchildren, Marjorie Ann Hillman of Hillsborough, N.H., Anne Marie Flynn of Concord, Va, Erin Kathleen Colson of Lincoln, Neb., Jason Drumheller of Cleveland, Ohio, Daniel Drumheller of Snellville, Ga., and Sarah Johnson of Loganville, Ga., Eric Mann, Tony Mann, and Jason Mann of Appomatox, Va; her great-grandchildren, James Thomas Thurman, Holly Ann Morris, Damon Anderson, Dillon Anderson, Devin Anderson, Maddy Anderson, Justin Colson and Kenny Colson; great-great-grandchildren, Bradley Morris and Aiden Thurman.      Robert Morris Sumpter Robert M. Sumpter, 93, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Floyd County, Virginia to the late James Hardee Sumpter and the late Addie Harman Sumpter. Mr. Sumpter was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from the Murdoch Developmental Center in Butner. He was an active member of Braggtown Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He was a longtime member of the YMCA. Mr. Sumpter is survived by his wife, Freda Hash Sumpter; daughter, Robyn Sumpter Riley and husband, Tim. Miss Pearl Walton, 37, died at her home today. On December 21, mother, Mrs. Melvina Elizabeth Walton, succumbed and ten days later her father, Lewis Walton, died. Miss Walton's sister, Ruth, of Washington, D.C., has been in a critical condition of pneumonia in a Roanoke hospital, but she was reported today to be improving. She was stricken while here to attend her father's funeral. She will be buried in the family cemetery near Graysville. Surviving, besides Miss Ruth Walton, are one brother, Alfred L., of Roanoke, and another sister, Mrs. Lewis Walton, Bent Mountain; an aunt, Mrs. Asa L. Connor and two uncles, William and David Poff, all of near Copper Hill. on January 12, 1938.3

Known for the magnificent flowers she grew, her floral arrangements graced the sanctuaries of each church she attended. She was one of the first merchants to sell produce at the Salem Farmer's Market in 1983 and continued thereafter for many years. Many friends and loved ones have been the blessed recipients of her kindness and hospitality throughout her time on this earth and she will be greatly missed. Surviving are a son, Aubrey Lee Alley of Florida; a daughter, Ella Mae McFalls, Roanoke; one sister, Margie Nichols, Pilot; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday from the Horne Funeral Chapel, Christiansburg, conducted by the Rev. Leon Alley. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke. Friends may call anytime after noon Thursday at the funeral home and the family will receive friends there from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. on April 6, 2000.5
