Bowne and Helen Dana, in 1896 at Brooklyn, New York.5,4 Harrison Brooks Smith died on October 18, 1942 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 76.1,4 He Funeral services for Harrison Brooks Smith, 76, prominent attorney, banker, churchman and musician who died early Sunday at his home, "Bougemont," in South Hills, after a year's illness, will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Kanawha Presbyterian church. Rev. Warren S. Stone will officiate and burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family has requested that flowers be omitted. Pallbearers will be Isaac Noyes Smith, E. Dana. Smith, Fred M. Staunton, David N. Gittinan, Henry B. Lewis and Robert S. Spilman, Sr. Mr. Smith succumbed to a complication of illnesses resulting from an attack of influenza and pneumonia. His health became impaired in 1939 when he suffered a paralytic stroke from which he only partially recovered. Mr. Smith was the fifth of his family, in direct descent, engaged in law practice. Col. Benjamin H. Smith, his grandfather, was one of the prominent lawyers of his generation and his father, Isaac Noyes Smith, as a senior member of the firm of Smith and Knight, until his death in 1882, was one of the most distinguished lawyers in West Virginia. Harrison Brooks Smith was born in Charleston, Sept. 7, 1866. His mother was Caroline Quarrier Smith. He attended public schools, Kanawha military school, Washington and Lee university and Princeton university, from which he was graduated in 1886 with an A. B. degree. He began the study of law at the University of Virginia. This course was interrupted by illness but later he studied law in the office of his uncle, William A. Quarrier of Charleston, and was admitted to the bar in 1889. Starting practice alone, he soon became a member of the firm of Adams and Smith. Later, he was associated with the legal firm of Couch, Flournoy & Smith. Mr. Couch, withdrew and the firm became known as Flourney, Price and Smith. This firm was succeeded by Price, Smith, Spilman & Clay which in turn became Price, Smith & Spilman upon the death of Buckner Clay. Mr. Smith was the senior partner at the time of his death. Mr. Smith had served as president of the Kanawha Banking and Trust company of which he was one of the founders, since 1929. He was president of the West Virginia Coal company and was associated with several other business enterprises. He organized the old Charleston trust company and served as president of the George Washington Life Insurance company, which he founded in 1906, until 1934. Mr. Smith not only an accomplished musician, playing the organ and violin, but also was a patron of music. He sponsored numerous musical enterprises in Charleston throughout his life. He began his musical career at Washington and Lee university, where he was an assistant organist. For many years he played the pipe organ at Kanawha Presbyterian church. This organ, donated by his great grandfather, Isaac Noyes, was probably the first one west of the Allegheny mountains. Mr. Smith was an ardent tennis player, having introduced the sport in Charleston. In 1881, he constructed a tennis court in his father's yard at Morris and Kanawha streets after ordering playing equipment from a New York dealer. He was the donor of the large three-year challenge trophy in Charleston's first invitational amateur tennis championship tournament. While at Washington and Lee, Mr. Smith played baseball and owned the first bicycle in Lexington, Va. Mr. Smith was a member of the Edgewood Country club, being one of its founders; Princeton Club of New York; Princeton Golf club of Princeton, N.J., Merion Cricket club of Philadelphia. He acted as chairman of the West Virginia Committee for the Selection of Rhodes scholarships from 1928 to 1938. He also was a member of the executive commission of the general assembly, of the Presbyterian church of the U.S. He had been prominent for many years in the Masonic fraternity, being a Knight Templar and a Shriner. Mr. Smith is survived by his widow, the former, Katherine Dana Bowne of New York City, whom he married in 1896, two sons, Harrison Bowne Smith of Charleston and Alexander Quarrier Smith of the U.S. Army; a daughter, Mrs. George Fox of Gainsville, Fla., and five grandchildren. on October 19, 1942.4
