Patterson on December 25, 1894 at Fayette Co., West Virginia.⁴ Lucy Jane Smith died on November 16, 1951 at Gatewood, Fayette Co., West Virginia.^2,5 She Gatewood, Nov. 16 - Mrs. Lucy Jane Patterson, 85, died at her home in Gatewood Friday after an extended illness. She was a member of the Pleasant View Brethren Church at Gatewood. Survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. May Massey, of Gatewood; four brothers, Joseph Smith and Thomas Smith, both of Fayetteville, Route 1; Bruce Smith, Pence Springs; and John Smith, of Princeton; three sisters, Elizabeth Smith, Gatewood; Mrs. Nancy McNeal, Prosperity; and Mrs. Laura Stull, of Salem. The body is at the Collins Funeral Home in Glen Jean where funeral arrangements are incomplete. on November 17, 1951.⁵

     Samuel Strickler was buried at Strickler Cemetery, Rt. 221 N. near Little River Bridge, Floyd Co., Virginia.¹ He From an extract of a letter written in 1915 by T. K. DeWitt, husband of Samuel Strickler's daughter Sarah. "I am proud to say to you that Samuel Strickler was a high toned upright gentleman, lived a moral and sober life and had at one time considerable real estate. He like myself and many others lost by being surety for others. And the war hurt him but he had a good home as long as he lived. He was in the Confederate service, was on detached duty hunting up deserters principally in this (Floyd) County, and had a horse killed from under him just a short time before the surrender by the Yankees that raided through here. He was a brave man. Samuel Strickler was a Justice of the Peace of this County for a long time, was at one time under the old regime one of the presiding justices. He was a clerk of the Board of School Trustees until he became too feeble to travel." He was born on September 17, 1820 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.¹ He married Nancy Ann Helms, daughter of John Helms and Sarah Mosbey "Sallie" Livesay, on December 4, 1844 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2 Samuel Strickler died on August 21, 1907 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 86.¹

Turner, daughter of Mary Turner, on June 23, 1885 at Floyd Co., Virginia.³ John Thrash West left a will on November 17, 1900; I, John T. West, Sr. of Copper Hill, Floyd County, Virginia, make this my last will. I give, devise and bequeath my estate and property real and personal as follows, that is to say, I give and devise to my wife Emma West all my land that lays South of a straight line from a point in the center of the main road opposite a Chestnut tree standing on the west side of the road between the barn and the ford of the river, about 50 yards south of the River, thence nearly on west ________ to where my line and P. B. Aldridge's line crosses the river, Mansion House situated over said described land also all the land on the east side of the Road. Barn situated on said land. Also all the timber land on the east side of the Main road leading from my house to Copper Hill as her right of dower to have and to hold for her own use as long as she lives. It is my will that all the balance of my land also all my personal Property be sold as soon after my death and upon such time as my Executors hereinafter named thinks best and out of the proceeds of the sale first pay all my debts and burial expense and cost of executing this My will including the Executors Pay as hereinafter specified then take one third of the net proceeds and put it out on interest, or keep it on interest as long as my wife Emma West lives the interest to be collected anuly by My Executors and paid to my wife Emma West for her own use then it is my wish that my Executor pay my first oldest children $40.00 a piece, that is, I give John T. West, Jr. forty dollars, Rosina Allis Burnett forty dollars, Stanton R. West forty dollars, Mary L. Sowder forty dollars and William J. West forty dollars in consideration of their Mothers interest in my land then divide the Balance equally between all my ten children. Then it is my will that at the death of my wife Emma West that my Executors sell the balance of my land that is the land left her as her dower or such time as they think best and collect the amount that is on interest and divide it equally between my ten children, but if my wife Emma West at my death would rather have the interest on one third of the net proceeds from the sale of all my land and property than to have the use of the land I have allotted to her then it is my will that all my land and property be sold and that my Executors take one third of the net proceeds of the sale and put it on interest during the lifetime of my wife Emma West and collect the interest anualy and pay it to my wife Emma West for her own use and take the balance on the other two thirds and Distribute it between my children as herein_____ stated in this my will and at the death of my wife collect the amount that is out on interest and divide it equally between my Ten Children. I nominate and appoint John T. West, Jr., Stanton R. West, Wm. J. West and Walter R. West as my Executors to this my will all or any two of them can act as Executor and it is my will that they be not required to give security as Executors nor may Property appraised it is my will that my Executors sell my land without any decree of Court and convey the title to the purchaser and that my Executors shall have fifty dollars for their trouble of executing this my will to be divided equally between those that act as executors. Aldridge was probably Pinkney B. Aldridge (1852-1916) and M. J. Aldridge was probably Pinkney's brother, Milton Jefferson Aldridge (1851-1911). Pinkney and Milton were sons of Joseph L. Aldridge who was a brother to Mary Margaret Aldridge, the first wife of John T. West, Sr.⁸ He died on September 27, 1909 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 84.^1,2,5

     Charles H. Turner was buried at Charles H. Turner Cemetery, about 2 miles south of County Line Church, in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Floyd Co. line, Franklin Co., Virginia.¹ He was born on June 25, 1818.¹ He married Violet Hall on March 23, 1838. Charles H. Turner died on May 20, 1857 at age 38.¹

     Arminda Ellen "Minnie" Poff was buried at Head of the River Cemetery (also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.^8,7 She was born on August 7, 1885 at Copper Hill, Floyd Co., Virginia; Her death certificate has a birth date of Aug 12, 1884.^9,2,3,6,7 She married Waller Cleveland Conner, son of George Benjamin Conner and Ellen Iddings, on April 17, 1904 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^3,5,7 As of April 17, 1904,her married name was Conner. Arminda Ellen "Minnie" Poff died on November 29, 1945 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 60.⁷

     Violet Hall was buried at Charles H. Turner Cemetery, about 2 miles south of County Line Church, in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Floyd Co. line, Franklin Co., Virginia.¹ She was born on May 6, 1817.¹ She married Charles H. Turner on March 23, 1838. As of March 23, 1838,her married name was Turner. Violet Hall died on April 8, 1906 at age 88.¹

"John" Sowers was buried at Red Oak Grove Cemetery, Rt. 221 east from Floyd, left on Bethlehem Church Road NE, left at next fork (Red Oak Grove Road north), on a hill across from Red Oak Grove Church of the Brethren, Floyd Co., Virginia.³ He was born on September 12, 1797 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.¹ He married Catherine Lester, daughter of John Lester I and Catherine Plickenstalver, on April 10, 1824 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.^4,5 Johannes H. "John" Sowers left a will on August 25, 1876 at Floyd Co., Virginia; I John H. Sowers of the county of Floyd and state of Virginia being of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding do make this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former last wills & testament and writings in the nature of last wills & testament by me heretofore made ----- My will is first that all the Just debts & funeral expenses of myself & my wife Catherine Sowers shall be paid by my Executor herein after named ----- I will and bequeath to the heirs of my son Hewlin L. Sowers one dollar ----- I will & bequeath to my son Joseph D. Sowers one dollar ----- I will & bequeath to my grand-daughter Catherine Sowers One good bed & one milk cow provided she continue to live with me & my wife till our death or until she may marry -----I will & bequeath to my daughters E. Ellen Winters & Pollie Wickham all my household and Kitchen property that may remain after the death of myself & wife or the one that may live the longer ----- to be equally divided between them provided that in case E.
