He was born on June 19, 1827 at Franklin Co., Virginia. He married Viola Ann "Viley" Martin, daughter of William Martin and Sarah "Sallie" Harris, on December 21, 1848 at Patrick Co., Virginia. John Powell Hale died in 1862.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 1996, at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, with the Rev. Lynn R. Riddle officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday at Gardner Funeral Home, where the family will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on February 5, 1996.⁵

     Marvin Richard Sutphin was buried at Highland Memory Gardens, Rt. 11 between Dublin and Radford, Pulaski Co., Virginia.² He Marvin Richard Sutphin, age 73 of Christiansburg passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 in the New River Valley Medical Center. Born June 21, 1941 in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late Columbus Franklin Richard Sutphin and Goldie Dalton Sutphin. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, and two brothers. He was retired from RAAP. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Joyce Sweeney Sutphin, Christiansburg, son, Richard Sutphin and Claren, Christiansburg, Grandchildren, Sophie Rose Sutphin and Rucker Boone Sutphin.      Doctor Floyd "Dock" Sweeney was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁴ He was born on January 8, 1932 at Floyd Co., Virginia.² He married Virgie Belle Main, daughter of Walter L. Main and Celesta Alma Vest, on September 21, 1956 at Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.^{7,1,2,8,9,10,4,11} Doctor Floyd "Dock" Sweeney died on March 1, 2021 at Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 89.⁴ He Dock Floyd Sweeney, 89, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 1, 2021. He was a member of Hollins Church of the Nazarene. He was a graduate of the Floyd High School class of 1952. Dock served his country in the U.S. Navy, after his discharge in 1960, he became a fireman and later a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service where he retired. He was greeted in heaven by his father and stepmother, Lester Earl Sweeney Sr. and Annie B. Sweeney; mother and stepfather, Bivie Peters Yearout and Taz Yearout; son, Steven Sweeney; and brother, L.E. Sweeney. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Virgie Main Sweeney; grandchildren, Heather, Ashley, Daniel, and Mitchell Sweeney; great-grandchildren, Cerria, Tyler, Morgan, Austin, Colin, Mia, and Elena; sisters, Zona Dobbins and her husband, Sonny, Barbara Breeding, Jane Brewer and her husband, Dan, Joyce Sutphin, Patricia Cisco and her husband, Sam, June Hayslett and her husband, Eddie; brother, Clonnie Yearout and wife, Robyn; sisters-in-law, Sandra Sweeney, Betty Main, and Martha Fitzwater and husband, Richard; and brother-in-law, Harold Main and wife, Ellen. Born on May 31, 1910, in Floyd County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charlie Thomas and Mary Sisson Conner. Mrs. Thompson had been a resident of Maple Acres for 56 years and was a homemaker. She was a member of Ceres Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Craft Class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edd Thompson, on July 22, 1982; a grandson, Jimmy Wayne Thompson, and a brother, Ray Conner. Surviving are a son, Jimmy W. Thompson and wife, Nedra of Maple Acres; a daughter, Meryleen Lambert and husband, Jim of Roanoke, Va; a grandson, David E.
