Holcomb, Sr., 70, of Bassett, passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. Born on January 7, 1937 in Franklin County, the son of the late Kermit Holcomb and the late Lucy Aldridge Holcomb. Also preceded in death by brother, John Melvin Holcomb. Mr. Holcomb was a member of Fork Mountain United Methodist Church. Glennis was a semi-retired, self employed carpenter who had such unique carpentry and building skills, that many friends, neighbors, and relatives always requested his services to complete jobs. He loved to go fishing at SML and enjoyed riding his golf cart at Waterfront Park. He was an avid Nascar fan and will always be remembered as a quiet, independent man with a big heart who was very caring and giving. "Pappy" was a great carpenter who was taken too early from this life but is now the foreman for the Master Carpenter. Surviving is his loving wife and best friend of 50 years, Shirley Hardy Holcomb; one son, Glennis Holcomb, Jr. of Bassett; one daughter, Cheryl Holcomb of Roanoke; and a special "granddaughter" and loving four legged companion Abby. Also surviving are two brothers and sisters in law, Wayne and Sherry Holcomb of Rocky Mount and Douglas (D.L.) and Bobbie Holcomb of Boones Mill; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Freeda Brown and Randolph Brown of Rocky Mount and Carmel Powell and Jim Powell of Rocky Mount; and sister-inlaw, Nancy K. Kermit and Lucy Holcomb and by his wife of 61 years, Sherry McGhee Holcomb; son, Neil Holcomb; grandson, Daniel Buckner, brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Nancy Holcomb; brother, Glennis Holcomb; sister, Carmel Powell; sister and brother-in-law, Freeda and Randolph Brown. Surviving are his children, Kenneth W. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Freeda Holcomb Brown; children, Charles R. Brown, Jr. (Peggy), Don A. Brown, Carl W. Brown, Susan B. Rea (Terry), and Linda B. Davis (Mike); two grandsons, Bobby Rea (Stephanie), Stephen Brown; great-grandson, Ethan Rea; sister, Lois B. Purdy; brother, Luther Brown; sister-in-law, Dyanne Brown; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Randolph served with the US Army during the Korean War in the 43rd infantry division. He retired from DuPont as a T.A. with 38 years of service. He was a very active member of Fork Mountain United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was Superintendent of Sunday School and held many other positions. Mr. Hollins loved the church and all those he served with, both the ministers and the church families, at the old Asheboro Street Baptist Church and the Lawndale Baptist Church, where he was a member at his passing. Smith, 91, of Copper Hill, Va., passed on to be with his eternal Saviour and the love of his life, wife, Helen Sue Manning Smith, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Floyd County, Va., and was predeceased by his parents, "Bob" and Cassie Smith. R.B. was also predeceased by four brothers. Those surviving to cherish his memory are his daughters, Serena Jacobs (Donald) of Copper Hill and LuAnn (Gary) Smith of Salem; brothers, Herbert (Alice) Smith of Roanoke, and Ray (Diann) Smith of Copper Hill; sisters, Myrtle Curran of Florida and Ocie Smith of Colorado; step grandsons, Devin and Derek (Angela) Jacobs; and step great-granddaughter, Journee Jacobs. Kate is survived by her daughter, Peggy Bowles Musselman, of Blue Ridge; granddaughters, Katherine Musselman Morck, of Goodview, and Shirl Musselman Garrett, of Salem; five great-grandchildren, Robert Morck and wife, Kelly, Billy Morck, Tommy, Stephanie and Spencer Garrett; and niece, Mrs. Helen Sue Smith and husband, R.B., of Copper Hill. Surviving are his wife, Betty Willis Anders; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna Anders, Roanoke, Charlotte and Donnie Reed, Christiansburg; a beloved granddaughter, Amber Reed; one brother, Randall Anders; one sister, Doris Anders, both of McCoy; a special friend, Jack Kipps, Christiansburg. Entombment in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. on January 26, 1994.⁶
