Nichols, 65, a Norfolk and Western freight conductor living at 716 11th St., N. W., was found dead early yesterday in the West End yards, a apparently killed by a railway car. Nichols apparently was on his way to report to his train when he was struck. Investigation indicated Nichols was struck by a car, uncoupled from an engine on the "hump," and was dragged a distance of about 1,000 feet. The body was discovered about 2:30 a.m. 400 feet east of Tenth St., bridge. Nicholas entered the N&W service in 1911 as a brakeman and was promoted to conductor in 1918. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mada Conner Nichols, three sons and four daughters; Howard B. Nichols, James Nichols, Irvin D. Nichols, Mrs. E. V. Gillespie, Jr., Miss Barbara Lee Nichols and Miss Peggy Joyce Nichols, Roanoke; Mrs. R. E. Lucado, Bristol, Tenn; a brother, F. R. Nichols, and a sister, Mrs. E. C. Argenbright, West Augusta; and three grandchildren. Interment will be in Sherwood. on December 19, 1953.8

Lillian Carol Conner was born September 15, 1946, to the late Wilford Archie and Lake Evelyn Willis on Goose Creek in Check VA, Floyd County. She married James Earl Conner, Jr. Feb 3, 1973. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2023. She is survived by daughter, Rhonda Conner-Morgan and son-in-law Anthony Morgan; grandsons, Brock Collins (Rebecca), and Ryan Collins (Brittany); great grandchildren, Grayson, Hayden, Mackenzie, Carson and Conner Collins; siblings, Ruth Willis Price, and Michael Willis (Wanda); and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Conner, Jr; siblings, Edna Willis Morris, Thomas Wesley Willis, Wilford Archie Willis, Jr., and Jerry Lee Willis. She retired on March 1, 2019, after thirty-seven years with the United States Postal Service. The last twenty-seven years she served as the Postmaster in Riner, VA. She enjoyed stock car racing and had many years of success and enjoyment with her husband as co-owners of Conner Racing. The family would like to thank the University of Virginia Emily Couric Cancer Center, Dr. Linda Duska, and her medical staff for the extensive care and love provided for the last 5 years of her life. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, VA.4 She was born on September 15, 1946 at Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.9,4 She married Edward Lane "Eddie" Sledd on November 12, 1965 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1 As of November 12, 1965,her married name was Sledd. Lillian Carol Willis and Edward Lane "Eddie" Sledd were divorced on April 11, 1969 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.10 Lillian Carol Willis married James Earl Conner Jr., son of James Early Conner and Cora Genova Hundley, on February 3, 1973 at Floyd Co., Virginia.5,6,2,3,4 As of February 3, 1973,her married name was Conner.2 Lillian Carol Willis died on April 8, 2024 at Virginia at age 77.4
