Statler of Logan, WV; siblings Marc Statler and wife Almira of Roanoke, VA; James Sparks and wife Kimberley of Louisville, KY and June Strow (nee: Sparks) and husband Michael of Powder Springs, GA. He is also survived by his nieces and nephew, Nicole Sparks, Brittney Sparks, Jonathan Strow and Alexandra Strow; as well as loving aunts, uncles and many, many cousins. He will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV. on December 8, 2013.3

Born December 25, 1928, in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was the son of the late Ernest & Anna Marie Riley Sparks. Raised in Nemours, he was a graduate of Bramwell High School, was an outstanding basketball player for the school. Mr. Sparks graduated from Concord College and had earned his Master's Degree from Marshall University. Immediately following WW II, Mr. Sparks entered the service with the U.S. Army, during the Occupation in Germany. He has served two tours in Korea with the 1st Ranger Battalion, three tours in Vietnam with the Special Forces units. Mr. Sparks was in the very first unit of the Green Beret, orders given by President John Kennedy. He had received numerous decorations, medals, badges and commendations. His career with the U.S. Army span more than 22 years, having received a Purple Heart, the Soldier's Medal for bravery and the Bronze Star. When he had retired, he had earned the rank of Command Sergeant Major, with the U.S. Army. After his career with the military, he returns to Mercer County, where his leadership was instrumental in the formation of OH-9. Once completed, he was associated with the Department of Human Services; he retired as its administrator for Mercer County. Mr. Sparks was a past Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O.E. Lodge # 1457 of Princeton and a member of the Princeton Moose Lodge #1521. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Sparks was devoted to his family, God and his country. Survivors His loving and caring wife of 50 years, Betty June Connor Sparks; Children James M. Jim was retired from WV Department of Highways with 22 years of service and had previously worked several years with Martin Aircraft company in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a long standing member of Princeton Elks Lodge # 1459. He loved his family and was known to many young children as the "Magic Man". He enjoyed sports and in the 1970's coached Princeton Sacred Heart Catholic Church basketball team to the city championship in the church league. Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Phyllis Conner Posey of the home, two daughters Donna Linkous and husband Craig of Christiansburg, VA; Lynn Pendleton and husband Allen of Princeton; one son, James Thomas Posey, III and wife Tammy with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. He is survived by four grandchildren, Candace Lynn Pendleton of Princeton, Dr. Jenna Lynn Walter and husband Jason of Bowling Green, KY; Callie Kay Posey of Mechanicsburg, PA; James Thomas Posey, IV of Radcliff, KY; one sister, Judy Greenspon and husband Walter of Charlottesville, VA; several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Serving as pallbearers will be Charlie Pace, Jim Luciano, Owen McKay, Steve Pendleton, Jerry Richardson, and Matthew Morris. Honorary pallbearers will be Dominic Luciano, Jim Quattrone and Joe Wheby.2 He was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2 He was born on December 1, 1929 at Nemours, Mercer Co., West Virginia.3,1,2 He married Phyllis Joan Conner, daughter of A. R. B. Conner and Clara Bena Wheby, on May 28, 1954 at Baltimore, Maryland.3,1,4,5,2 James Thomas Posey Jr. died on April 18, 2011 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 81.2
