Curtis was a member of Floyd Baptist Church. He was a former Commonwealth Attorney for Floyd County and a former President of the Bank of Floyd. He was a graduate of Roanoke College and University of Virginia Law School. He also served as a Captain in the Army A Force in WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hardee and Addie Sumpter; one sister, Vera Dehart; and three brothers, James H. Sumpter, Jr., Melvin H. Sumpter, and William R. Sumpter. He is survived by two brothers, Joseph A. Sumpter of Duluth, Ga., Robert M. Sumpter of Durham, N.C; four sisters, Alice Sumpter of Bluefield, W.Va., Katherine Elder of Buena Vista, Marjorie Drumheller of Lynchburg, Virginia Hawes of Roanoke. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at Floyd Baptist Church with Dr. Alton Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home. on April 11, 2000.1

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 10, 2002 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd from 1 to 2 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow, with burial in Jacksonville Cemetery.
