He trained as a postal clerk in Hampton Roads and served on the U.S.S. Nevada until December 29, 1920 when he was dishonorably discharged from the Navy because he was too young when he joined. He sent a few letters to his mom and sisters while in the service. He never returned home or made contact with his parents or siblings after his departure from the Navy. Both Gladys and Alfred could be seen everywhere as a couple from their joint activity in church events, visiting, and helping friends and family in need, traveling to the beach and several trips to Germany to visit their son. It was unusual to see one without the other. Gladys' love of China painting translated into many gifts for family and friends. She quilted with the church group for many years, providing transportation for those otherwise unable to go. She was a charter member of the Stitch and Chatter Club, a group of young wives in the war years of the 40's who remained lifetime friends. Love and appreciation to companion Martha Redford, the staff at Our Lady of the Valley, her niece Rosemary Thomas, and Good Samaritan Hospice for their help and support during the last few months. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on March 17, 2003.²
