     George Ellis "G. E." Peters George Ellis Peters, Apr 11, 1940 - Apr 04, 2024. George Ellis (G.E.) Peters, 83, of Copper Hill, passed away at home surrounded by his family on April 4, 2024. He graduated from Check High School in 1958, served in the US Navy for 1960-1966, worked for Richards Auto Alignment 1966-1976, and worked for Roanoke Electric Steel from 1976-2007. During his retirement he enjoyed many of the activities that his grandchildren participated in. G.E was a member of the Copper Hill Church of the Brethren for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hobert Peters and Clara Artokie Peters; siblings: Christine Richards, Curtis Peters, Shirley Peters, Raymond Peters, Junior Peters. Survived by wife of 59 years: Joyce Conner Peters; Sons: Greg Peters (C.J.), Moneta, VA, Mark Peters (Karen), Copper Hill, VA; grandchildren: Cole Peters (Alexa), Moneta, VA, Joshua Peters, Copper Hill, VA, Leann Hill (Robert), Moneta, VA, Steven Peters, Copper Hill, VA; great grandchildren: Declan, Knox, Brody; sisters: Jean Willis, Moneta, VA, Carolyn Salley (Ken), Moneta, VA, Marie Kelley, Suffolk, VA, many nieces and nephews that were all special to him. Interment will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wood Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be held by the Floyd Masonic Lodge at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. on March 10, 1997.¹

Patton in the 4th Armoured Division as a tank commander. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct, and other ribbons. He was a life long resident of Floyd County and a firm believer in soil conservation, being one of the first farmers in Floyd County to use strip cropping and crop rotation. He served as an assistant agriculture teacher at Check High School before becoming president of Hatcher & Hall Dairies, Inc. He helped found Select Sires, and was on the Board of Directors of Maryland and Virginia Dairy Association. He was also a member of Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Pauline Sisson Hatcher. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Larry and Barbara Hatcher of Floyd, Neal and Debbie Hatcher of Greensboro, N.C., Reba and Wayne Goff of Floyd, Norma and Ralph Roberts of Frederick, Md; grandchildren, Sterling Hatcher, Kristin Goff, Nicholas and Suzanne Hatcher, and Julia Roberts; step granddaughter, Heather Pratt; step great-granddaughter, Cassidy Jordan Pratt. Graveside services will be in Jacksonville Cemetery with Military Rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Floyd Post #7854. on June 2, 2001.¹
