Sowers per information compiled in 1937 by Cleophus Vest, Roanoke, Virginia, Roland was son of Littleberry, also the information is contained in some of Dr. Walter E. Vest's letters as early as 1906 to A. E. Vest, Colorado Springs, Colarado. Also, family remembers John E. Vest talking of Uncle Roland.1 He married Edith Hawkins.2 Rowland Vest was born circa 1809 at Virginia.1 He married Delilah Vest on February 9, 1830.2

He was the son of the late Floyd W. and Janie Webster Freeman. He served in WWII with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a member of the VFW Post 1264. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earnest, Robert, and Floyd Freeman. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Stella Craighead Freeman; children, Norma F. VanHoy and husband Bobby, JoAnn Alley and husband Harrison, and Jerry Freeman; several grandchildren, special grandson, Bobby Lee VanHoy and special granddaughter, Angela VanHoy Bentley; several great-grandchildren; one special great-grandson, Aaron Lee VanHoy; brothers, Rudolph Freeman, Kenneth Freeman; and special brother, William "Bill" Freeman; sisters, Emma Poff, Hazel Smith, and Mary Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved by all and will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 13, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. on August 13, 2004.2

     Zachariah Ellsworth "Zack" Carr was buried at Head of the River Cemetery (also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.8,9 He was born on July 25, 1859 at Floyd Co., Virginia; His death certificate has a birth date of Jul 25, 1857.10,2,7 He married Mahala Catherine Manning, daughter of Cary Manning and Mahala Cole, on January 30, 1879 at Floyd Co., Virginia.2 Zachariah Ellsworth "Zack" Carr died on September 10, 1931 at Keystone, McDowell Co., West Virginia, at age 72.7,4 He Zachary E. Carr, 72, was instantly killed when struck by a local freight engine at Keystone, Thursday. The accident occurred just east ot the Norfolk and Western station in Keystone, a short distance from Mr. Carr’s home. Mr. Carr had been a resident of Keystone about ten years. He had lived a retired life for some time. He came originally from the Simpsons community, Floyd county, Virginia. He is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. J. T. Iddings of Eckman; Mrs. W. S. Light of Keystone; McKinley Carr of Bluefield, and James, Mark, V. T. and C. O. Carr, all of Simpsons, Va. He also is survived by his wife. Interment was made at Copper Hill, Floyd county, Virginia. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church. on September 13, 1931.4
