FatherAmos Lipford2,4 b. circa 1727/28, d. November 8, 1815
MotherFrances Traylor2,4 b. circa 1729/30, d. after 1810
Anthony Par Lipford Anthony P. Lipford served as a Private in the Virginia Militia and in the Revolutionary War. He substituted in 1780 for George Wright at Cumberland Court House. In the 4th Regiment he serving under Colonel Stubblefied at Hillsborough, North Carolina, and was in the battle of Rougeley's Mills where the American Army was defeated. His second tour was served in the 3rd Virginia Regiment under Colonel Wilson, which marched with the famous French General Lafayette to meet General Wayne at Raccoon Ford.

Anthony and then his widow Elizabeth received a war pension of $36.66 yearly, which was increased to $96 in 1868. Elizabeth was also granted 160 acres of bounty land located in the Kansas Territory, which she sold to Richard Disney in 1857. The family lived in Cumberland County until 1788, when they moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia.5 He Book 14, Accounts Current, pp. 306-308, lists amounts paid, including cash to Amos Lipford $330.00, Daniel Lipford $347.75, Anthony Lipford (son of Fielding Lipford who had died) $129.09, and John Y. Yeatts (for Elizabeth Feline Lipford Yeatts, granddaughter) $155.53. at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.6 He was born in 1755 at Dinwiddie Co., Virginia.2 He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Robinson/Robertson, daughter of Field Robinson/Robertson and Obedience Bradshaw, on July 25, 1785 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.2,6 Anthony Par Lipford Anthony Par Lipford bought one hundred and twelve (112) acres of land on the north side of the Banister River in Pittsylvania County from John Chatten for one hundred pounds "current money of Virginia". The transaction was recorded in Pittsylvania County courthouse records on January 18, 1790. in 1789.2 He married Elizabeth Ferguson, daughter of William Ferguson and Besheba Newbill, on April 20, 1827 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.2,3 Anthony Par Lipford On this 21st of October in the year of one thousand eight hundred and thirty three personally appeared in open court before the County Court of Pittsylvania now sitting Anthony P. Lipford, a resident of the county of and state aforesaid aged seventy eight years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress, June 7, 1832:
that he entered the service of the United States, the day month or year he does not exactly remember, under Captain Charles Ballow; his Lieutenant was named Threadgill and his Ensign was named John Mortin.
He entered the service as a substitute for a certain George Albright at Cumberland Court House, Virginia for a Tour of Eight months.
He was marched to rendezvous at Hillsborough in North Carolina and was there attached to the Fourth Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Colonel Stubblefield. His Major was named Spencer.
From thence he was marched to Rougely's Mill in South Carolina under General Stephens near Camden, where General Gates was Commander in Chief.
From Rougely's Mills he was marched to meet the British Army.
The two armies met after the American Army had gone a few miles and had an engagement.
The American Army under Gates was defeated.
After that he came back to Hillsborough with four or five hundred others.
He was then moved to New Garden in North Carolina and after staying there for a while he was moved to Guilford Court House where he served out his tour. Captain Ballow was with him when he came back to Hillsborough and was at New Garden, but finally left the troops.
The number dwindled down to a Captain's command.
He does not now remember that Captain's name distinctly but is under the impression it was Daniel and he was discharged by him at Guilford Court House.
He put his discharge on his return home in the hands of his Father and he cannot now tell what has become of it.
He also states that in a short time after he came home he was drafted in the services again under Captain William Meredith at Cumberland Court House. Captain Meredith's Lieutenant was named Robert Anderson.
From Cumberland Court House he was marched to Richmond and from Richmond to Wilton.
At that time he was attached to the third Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Colonel Wilson. Major Machumen was his Major.
At Wilton, La Fayette was Commander.
From Wilton he was marched to Raccoon Ford on the Rappahannock.
There General Wayne met them.
He was there discharged by General Mulenburg, his Brigadier General.
This was a tour of three months and his discharge for that tour is also lost.
He has no documentary evidence to prove his service except the affidavits herewith filed.
He was born in Dinwiddie County Virginia in the year 1755 as he is informed by his parents. He has no record of his age. When he entered the service he lived in the county of Cumberland Virginia and there remained until the year 1788. He then moved to Pittsylvania County Virginia and now lives there.
The first tour of his service he was a substitute for George Wright and the second tour he was drafted. He has above stated as far as he is able the names of officers and also the names of the Regiments and circumstances of his service. For the names of persons to whom he is known in his present neighbourhood and who can testify for his character for verification and their belief of his services as a soldier of the Revolution he refers to Samuel M. Lovell, Robert Cook, Coalman D. Bennett and thousand others if needful. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid."
