Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St., Philippi, with the Rev. David L. Kidd Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery. on July 24, 2001.4

He was retired from DataCard Corporation and was a member of New Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Cannaday was a U. S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War and a lifetime member of the VFW. He is survived by a daughter, Michele Maas and husband, John of Homestead, FL; a sister, Betty Taylor and husband, Lewis of Grove City, Ohio; three grandchildren, Brian Maas, Nicholas Maas and Krystine Maas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur Cannaday and four sisters, Dorothy Cromer, Doris Pecora, Lucille Hurt and Mildred Conklin. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 5, 2010 in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sidney Norton officiating. According to a company spokesman, state and federal mine inspectors will investigate the accident today. Hurt was born at Blacksburg, Va. Aug. 8, 1913. He was a member of the Sophia Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Cannady Hurt; his parents, John Bittle and Minnie Lee Shaver Hurt of Salem, Va; two sons, Daniel M. of Hampton, Va., and Nelson E. Hurt with the Army in Hawaii, one daughter, Nora Lee Hurt at home and three grand children. The funeral will be held at the Sophia Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade Webb and the Rev. F. C. Calhoun officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The date of the funeral has not been set The body is at Williams Funeral Home in Sophia. on November 9, 1961.3

     Emma Elizabeth Straughan was buried at Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery, Route 119, Philippi, Barbour Co., West Virginia.2 She was born on November 28, 1917 at Longacre, Fayette Co., West Virginia.3,2 As of April 23, 1965,her married name was Cannaday.1 She married Wilbur Morton Cannaday, son of Roy Morton Cannaday and Lilly Mae Kelley, on April 23, 1965 at Ansted, Fayette Co., West Virginia.1,2,4 Emma Elizabeth Straughan died on April 19, 2010 at Philippi, Barbour Co., West Virginia, at age 92.2,3 She Elizabeth Straughan Cannaday, 92, a resident of Mansfield Place and a former resident of Route 4 Sand Run Road, Philippi, passed away April 19, 2010, in United Hospital Center. She was born Nov. 28, 1917, at Longacre, a daughter of the late John Webster and Willa Coleman Mason. Elizabeth was twice married: First on July 17, 1934, to Paul Garner Straughan, who preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1962; and second on April 23, 1965, to Wilbur M. Cannaday, who preceded her in death July 22, 2001. Surviving are one son: Gary Straughan of 4-H Road, Philippi; former daughter-in-law, Janet Straughan of 4-H Road, Philippi; two nephews, Brian Allen Pell of Sistersville and Shirley Edward Pell of Ft. Worth, Texas; four grandchildren, Kimberly Phillips, Vicki Straughan, Amy Straughan and John Paul Straughan; and five great-grandchildren, Jerry and Samantha Straughan, Ethen Crites, Hope Willhoit and Amber Phillips. Elizabeth was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Merle Barker; one grandson, John Michael Barker; and one sister, Margaret Pell. She worked as a secretary for Cannaday Mining Repair and was a homemaker. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed fishing, ceramics and sewing. Elizabeth was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church. Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi Wednesday, April 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the service hour, with the Rev. Jon Villers officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. on April 20, 2010.2
