5,6 Herbert Gray TOSSES DYNAMITE AT FEET. MAN KILLS WIFE. Body of Mrs. Alice Gray, Of Montgomery, Mangled by Explosion — Husband Arrested. Visitors here from Montgomery tell of one of the most brutal murders ever enacted there, when Mrs. Alice Gray was killed by an explosion of dynamite. It is said that her husband ignited the fuse to the explosive, and threw it at the feet of the woman. Her body was mangled and she died instantly. According to the story, the husband, William Gray, while intoxicated, went to the woman's boarding house and, after being refused admittance, forced his way into the hallway, where the the crime was committed. The woman had left her husband some time ago, alleging that he mistreated her. The body was taken to near Avis, where the funeral was conducted this morning. Gray is under arrest in the
Montgomery jail. on July 11, 1916.
5 He LIFE TERM FOR GUY. Man Who Killed Wife With Dynamite Is Sentenced. Herbert Gray, who killed his wife by blowing her to atoms with dynamite, was sentenced to the penitentiary for life by the circuit court of Fayette county this week. Gray entered a plea of guilty soon after the jury was empanelled before which he was to have been given trial. He said that he committed the act because he intended to kill himself and his wife at the same time. With three sticks of dynamite in his hand, and with cap and fuse ready for exploding, Gray went to the house occupied by his wife, and after calling her into the doorway, lighted the fuse. The dynamite exploded while it was still in his hand. The explosion killed the woman instantly, and blew his left arm off just below the shoulder. His wife's daughter, by a former husband, was the only witness to the tragedy, and she was so affected by the explosion that her mentality is said to be impaired and it was decided not to require her to go onto the witness stand when the case was called for trial. Tho murder occurred at Marling. The woman had been living apart from Gray for some time. She was operating a boarding house at the time. Gray was said to have been drunk the morning of the killing. on July 26, 1916.
