     Ayres Hodnett Sr. Ayres and his family lived in the Buckingham/Cumberland Counties area until 1773 when he moved to Pittsylvania County, where he bought 272 acres of land from William King. This land was on Sandy Creek, near Chatham. (This land was described as a "land of Eden" by William Byrd in 1728.) He was born in 1732 at England.² He married Mary McGhee, daughter of Edward Thomas McGehee and Elizabeth DeJarnette, on April 19, 1760 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.^3,2 Ayres Hodnett Sr. died in August, 1779 at Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.³ He left a will on September 21, 1779; Will of Ayres Hodnett, Pittsylvania Co. Records, Deed Book 5, page 450: Will of Ayres Hodnett, Sr. Made Aug 1, 1779, Recorded Sep 21, 1779. In the Name of God Amen, August first one thousand seven hundred seventy nine, I, Ayres Hodnett, of Pittsylvania County being very sick, but of a sound memory, and calling to mind the mortality of the body that it is appointed for all men once to die, and knowing not whence it may please the Almighty God to call me from time into Eternity do constitute and ordain this is my last Will and Testament, and first of all I give my Soul unto the Almighty God that gave it and my Body to the Earth from whence it was, to be buried in a Christian Like Manner at the discretion of my Executers and what Worldly Goods the Almighty has been pleased to bless me with I do distribute in the following manner. Viz., I will that the land which I sold to Jeremiah White I make him a Right to him and his Heirs in this my will if he pay the money according to our Bargain. Second, I will to my son Benjamin Hodnett, one shilling Sterling to him and his Heirs forever. Third, I will that the Balance of my land Equally be divided between my three sons, John, James, and Daniel, and if my wife should conceive and bring forth a son in nine months after my death be shall come in for an equal part with the other sons, and if a daughter to share with my daughters as I shall hereafter in this will, and their Heirs forever. Fourth, I will to my sons all my Shop and Tools to them and these things forever. Fifth, I will the whole of my Estate of Negroes, Stocks of every kind, and all my household furniture to be equally divided between my children after my wife's decease. Item. I will that my Wife should have her life time in the land, which I will to my sons, and after her death to be divided in the above manner. I appoint Clay Tanner and Benjamin Terry Executors, and my wife Executrix of this my last Will and Testament and I do here unto set my hand and seal, the day of year above written.      Mary McGhee The 1782 Pittsylvania Co. Census showed Mary Hodnett as head of a household with 9 white souls and 3 black souls. And at another Court held for said County the 18th day of May in the Year aforesaid the Same was again presented in Court and Upon the motion of William Davis who made Oath thereto according to the Law and together with Joel Willis and Ayres Hodnett his securities entered into acknowledged their bond in the penalty of $500 conditioned as the Law directs Certificate is granted for obtaining the letters of administration and the Estate of Mary Hodnett with her Said Will annexed in due form. She married Ayres Hodnett Sr. on April 19, 1760 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.^2,3 As of April 19, 1760,her married name was Hodnett.      Littleberry "Berry" Vest was buried at Head of the River Cemetery (also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.¹ He Littleberry Vest signed a petition dated Nov. 11, 1787, favoring the sale of the Glebes with the money to be used for the public good. Also signing was Philip H. Vest. In 1815 he owned 175 acres of land on Runnet Bag. In 1818 he owned land on Otter Creek, Franklin Co., Virginia. He was born on November 28, 1774 at Campbell Co., Virginia.¹ He married Mary "Polly" Moore on January 7, 1805 at Campbell Co., Virginia.³ Littleberry "Berry" Vest married Sarah "Sally" James on January 3, 1817 at Franklin Co., Virginia.² Littleberry "Berry" Vest died on November 14, 1868 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 93.¹

     Andrew Jackson Goings was born in November, 1850 at Amherst Co., Virginia.^1,2 He married Nannie Elizabeth Nuckles on May 9, 1871 at Lynchburg, Virginia.^2,3

     Mary "Polly" Moore was born circa 1780 at Campbell Co., Virginia.¹ She married Littleberry "Berry" Vest, son of John Vest and Agnes Davidson, on January 7, 1805 at Campbell Co., Virginia.¹ As of January 7, 1805,her married name was Vest. Mary "Polly" Moore died circa 1816.²

     Edward Thomas McGehee Edward was a large land owner and planter. He had 2,830 acres of land in Amelia Co., Virginia in 1746 and 5,788 additional acres in 1748. In the Amelia Co. books his name is spelled "MackGehee". He served in the French and Indian War. He enlisted in Frederick Co., Virginia.⁴ He was born circa 1702 at King William Co., Virginia.⁴ He married Elizabeth DeJarnette, daughter of Jean "John" DeJarnette and Mary Mumford, on April 4, 1735 at Prince Edward Co., Virginia.^1,2,5,4 Edward Thomas McGehee left a will on April 4, 1770; WILL OF EDWARD McGEHEE, dated April 4th, 1770, recorded in Cumberland Co., Virginia, Will Book 2, p. 23.

     Elizabeth DeJarnette was born in 1708 at Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co., Virginia.¹ She married Edward Thomas McGehee, son of Thomas MackGhee and Ann Bastrop, on April 4, 1735 at Prince Edward Co., Virginia.^1,2,3,4 As of April 4, 1735,her married name was McGehee.⁴ Elizabeth DeJarnette died in 1783.³

     Henry L. Vest was buried at Winchester, Virginia.³ He was born on June 18, 1834 at Franklin Co., Virginia.^1,3 He married Rebecca Jane "Becky" Hall, daughter of Sarah "Sally" Hall, on December 19, 1854 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2,3 Henry L. Vest died on October 22, 1862 at Winchester, Virginia, at age 28; Died of typhoid fever while in the service.³

     Benjamin M. "Berry" Vest was buried at Samuel L. Vest Cemetery, Vest Tannery Road, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.³ He was born on April 15, 1836 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2,3 He married Harriet E. Swepston, daughter of George Washington Swepston and Mary Unknown, on November 11, 1858 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2 Benjamin M. "Berry" Vest died on February 19, 1918 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 81.^2,4,3

     Charles David Vest was buried at Hoback - Rutrough Cemetery, Rt. 221 E. by Rt. 679, 17 miles east of Floyd, Floyd Co., Virginia.¹ He was born on April 1, 1838 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,3 He married Margaret Ellen Hoback, daughter of William P. Hoback and Magdaline Bowman, on September 26, 1865 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^3,5,6,2 Charles David Vest died on March 2, 1878 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 39; Died of pneumonia.^1,2

     John E. Vest was buried at Samuel L. Vest Cemetery, Vest Tannery Road, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.⁴ He was born on February 23, 1840 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^2,1,4 He married Sarah Lucinda Juanna Hall, daughter of David A. Hall and Abigail Iddings, on September 12, 1867 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,5,2 John E. Vest died on June 6, 1922 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 82.^2,3,4

     Abigail "Abbie" Vest was buried at Head of the River Cemetery (also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.⁴ She was born on May 2, 1846 at Floyd Co., Virginia.⁴ She married James Mathias Furrow, son of Adam Furrow and Eliza Elizabeth Poff, on December 13, 1868 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,3,4 As of December 13, 1868,her married name was Furrow. Abigail "Abbie" Vest died on December 7, 1933 at Copper Hill, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 87.^2,3,4

     Thomas Linthicum IV was born on June 1, 1725 at Anne Arundel Co., Maryland.^3,4 He married Sarah Bennett on October 13, 1773 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.^5,2 Thomas Linthicum IV Dec 10, 1777 - Buys Buys 400 acres from Isaac Crews (Edward Linthicum was a witness on this deed - not sure of relationship) on December 10, 1777 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Buys about 340 acres from Guy Smith on November 7, 1778 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Sells 9_(?) acres to John Tones on September 1, 1779 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Sells 50 acres to Tunstall Quarles on October 9, 1782 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Thomas and Sarah sell about 250 acres to Leonard Thompson on October 14, 1782 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Roger Thompson, John Thompson, Samuel Richardson and Tunstall Quarles are ordered by the court of Fluvanna to travel to Sara since she "Cannot conveniently travel to our County Court to acknowledge the conveyance" (basically to give up her right of dower to the land sell to Leonard Thompson, not sure if she was sick or already in Pittsylvannia Co, Virginia at this time) on November 8, 1782 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Sarah relinguishes her right of dower to the lands sold to Leonard Thompson. on November 30, 1782. At a Court held for Pittsylvania County the 19th Day of September 1796 The within written last Will and Testament of Thomas Linthicum deceas'd was exibited into Court and proved by the Oaths of two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and Sarah Linthicum Widow & relict of the said Testator came into Court and renounces and disclaims all benefit or advantage of any Legacy or Legacies to her given Devised or bequeathed in and by the said last Will, and thereupon it is Ordered that Edward Hatchet, Richard Johnson, Stephen Yates and David Parsons or any three of them do lay off and asscertain to the said Sarah Linthicum one third part of and in the Estate of the said Testator, and report their proceedings Thereupon here to the Court. And afterwards to wit at a Court held for the said County the 20th Day of February 1797 came Thomas Linthicum one of the Executors Named in the said Will, and On his Motion Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of the Said Will in due form, he having first Taken the oath by Law prescribed, and with John Adams and Thomas B. Jones his Securities ordered into Bond as the Law directs and acknowledged the same.

     Sarah Bennett married Thomas Linthicum IV, son of Thomas Linthicum III and Sarah Burton, on October 13, 1773 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.^2,1 As of October 13, 1773,her married name was Linthicum. Sarah Bennett died after September 19, 1796 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.

     Thomas Linthicum Jr. Thomas Linthicum, Jr. left a noncupative will leaving everything to his wife, Delila. The will was dated January 31, 1843 and proved March 20, 1843. He married Mary Unknown. Thomas Linthicum Jr. Thomas Jr. and his wife Mary goes back to Fluvanna Co., Virginia, and sign a deed selling 100 acres to a Nancy Bashaw. (widow of Spencer Bashaw) on October 6, 1796 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He married Delilah Newton on March 27, 1827 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.¹ Thomas Linthicum Jr. died in 1843 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.

     Martha Jane Vest was buried at Galilee Church Cemetery, from Salem on Rt. 11, left on Rt. 603 across railroad tracks, Elliston, Montgomery Co., Virginia.^3,1 She was born on May 9, 1847 at Floyd Co., Virginia.³ She married James McDaniel on September 13, 1867 at Floyd Co., Virginia.² As of September 13, 1867,her married name was McDaniel. Martha Jane Vest died on April 4, 1927 at Montgomery Co., Virginia, at age 79.^3,1

     Edward W. Terry was born circa 1825 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.¹ He married Jane Ann Giles on January 10, 1848 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.

     Mollie James Goings was buried at Fair View Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave. N.W., Roanoke, Virginia.² She was born on October 11, 1875 at Campbell Co., Virginia; Her death certificate has a birth year of 1874.^4,3,2 As of May 24, 1893,her married name was Paxton.⁵ She married Cyrus Arlington Paxton on May 24, 1893 at Campbell Co., Virginia.^3,2 Mollie James Goings died on February 25, 1948 at Big Lick, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 72.²

     Cyrus Arlington Paxton was buried at Fair View Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave. N.W., Roanoke, Virginia.² He was born on February 15, 1859 at Amherst Co., Virginia.² He married Mollie James Goings, daughter of Andrew Jackson Goings and Nannie Elizabeth Nuckles, on May 24, 1893 at Campbell Co., Virginia.^1,2 Cyrus Arlington Paxton died on August 12, 1925 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 66.²

     His Social Security Number was 087-10-3682.³ Jesse Kimble Goings was buried at Presbyterian Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.^5,6 He and Elda Sarah Greth were divorced.^5,9 Jesse Kimble Goings was born on April 9, 1887 at Lynchburg, Virginia; Other records have a birth date of Apr 8, 1887 and his WWII Draft Registration card has a date of Apr 18, 1888.^{1,2,3,4,8,5,6,7} He married Elda Sarah Greth on May 28, 1930 at Berks Co., Pennsylvania.¹⁰ Jesse Kimble Goings died on September 24, 1965 at Lynchburg, Virginia, at age 78.^3,5,6

     Samuel Anderson Vest was buried at Samuel L. Vest Cemetery, Vest Tannery Road, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.³ He was born on April 11, 1852 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,2,4,3 He married Delilah Ann Moran, daughter of James Samuel "Jimmy" Moran and Delilah Cannaday, on November 21, 1871 at Patrick Co., Virginia.^5,2,6 Samuel Anderson Vest died on December 4, 1923 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 71.^1,2,7

     Rev. Ezra Stonewall Bowman was buried at Monte Vista Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 25 Wades Gap Road, Callaway, Franklin Co., Virginia.² He was born on September 10, 1900 at Virginia.² He married Emma Pauline King, daughter of Joseph Cephus King and Emma Cora Conner, on December 24, 1941.^1,3,2 Rev. Ezra Stonewall Bowman died on June 19, 1995 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 94.² He BOWMAN, Ezra Stonewall, Rev., 94, of Rt. 1, Callaway, died Monday, June 19, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital. He was born September 10, 1900 and was an Orchardist and retired Minister of the Church of The Brethren in Franklin County and surrounding Counties. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline King Bowman and is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley B. and Clark Jamison Jr; grandchildren, Jena and Trey Jamison; one brother and sister-in-law, Earnest P. and Grace Holt Bowman; and many nieces and nephews throughout the United States. Funeral services will be conducted from Monte Vista Church of The Brethren, 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Robert Jones and Rev. J. Willard Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 South Main Street, Rocky Mount. on June 20, 1995.²
