Ayres Hodnett Sr.1,2,3

     Ayres Hodnett Sr. Ayres and his family lived in the Buckingham/Cumberland Counties area until 1773 when he moved to Pittsylvania County, where he bought 272 acres of land from William King. This land was on Sandy Creek, near Chatham. (This land was described as a "land of Eden" by William Byrd in 1728.) He was born in 1732 at England.2 He married Mary McGhee, daughter of Edward Thomas McGehee and Elizabeth DeJarnette, on April 19, 1760 at Cumberland Co., Virginia.3,2 Ayres Hodnett Sr. died in August, 1779 at Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.3 He left a will on September 21, 1779; Will of Ayres Hodnett, Pittsylvania Co. Records, Deed Book 5, page 450: Will of Ayres Hodnett, Sr. Made Aug 1, 1779, Recorded Sep 21, 1779. In the Name of God Amen, August first one thousand seven hundred seventy nine, I, Ayres Hodnett, of Pittsylvania County being very sick, but of a sound memory, and calling to mind the mortality of the body that it is appointed for all men once to die, and knowing not whence it may please the Almighty God to call me from time into Eternity do constitute and ordain this is my last Will and Testament, and first of all I give my Soul unto the Almighty God that gave it and my Body to the Earth from whence it was, to be buried in a Christian Like Manner at the discretion of my Executers and what Worldly Goods the Almighty has been pleased to bless me with I do distribute in the following manner. Viz., I will that the land which I sold to Jeremiah White I make him a Right to him and his Heirs in this my will if he pay the money according to our Bargain. Second, I will to my son Benjamin Hodnett, one shilling Sterling to him and his Heirs forever. Third, I will that the Balance of my land Equally be divided between my three sons, John, James, and Daniel, and if my wife should conceive and bring forth a son in nine months after my death be shall come in for an equal part with the other sons, and if a daughter to share with my daughters as I shall hereafter in this will, and their Heirs forever. Fourth, I will to my sons all my Shop and Tools to them and these things forever. Fifth, I will the whole of my Estate of Negroes, Stocks of every kind, and all my household furniture to be equally divided between my children after my wife's decease. Item. I will that my Wife should have her life time in the land, which I will to my sons, and after her death to be divided in the above manner. I appoint Clay Tanner and Benjamin Terry Executors, and my wife Executrix of this my last Will and Testament and I do here unto set my hand and seal, the day of year above written. Also signing was Philip H. Vest. In 1815 he owned 175 acres of land on Runnet Bag. In 1818 he owned land on Otter Creek, Franklin Co., Virginia. He was born on November 28, 1774 at Campbell Co., Virginia.1 He married Mary "Polly" Moore on January 7, 1805 at Campbell Co., Virginia.3 Littleberry "Berry" Vest married Sarah "Sally" James on January 3, 1817 at Franklin Co., Virginia.2 Littleberry "Berry" Vest died on November 14, 1868 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 93.1

He Sells 50 acres to Tunstall Quarles on October 9, 1782 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He Thomas and Sarah sell about 250 acres to Leonard Thompson on October 14, 1782 at Fluvanna Co., Virginia. At a Court held for Pittsylvania County the 19th Day of September 1796 The within written last Will and Testament of Thomas Linthicum deceas'd was exibited into Court and proved by the Oaths of two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and Sarah Linthicum Widow & relict of the said Testator came into Court and renounces and disclaims all benefit or advantage of any Legacy or Legacies to her given Devised or bequeathed in and by the said last Will, and thereupon it is Ordered that Edward Hatchet, Richard Johnson, Stephen Yates and David Parsons or any three of them do lay off and asscertain to the said Sarah Linthicum one third part of and in the Estate of the said Testator, and report their proceedings Thereupon here to the Court. And afterwards to wit at a Court held for the said County the 20th Day of February 1797 came Thomas Linthicum one of the Executors Named in the said Will, and On his Motion Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of the Said Will in due form, he having first Taken the oath by Law prescribed, and with John Adams and Thomas B. Jones his Securities ordered into Bond as the Law directs and acknowledged the same.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline King Bowman and is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley B. and Clark Jamison Jr; grandchildren, Jena and Trey Jamison; one brother and sister-in-law, Earnest P. and Grace Holt Bowman; and many nieces and nephews throughout the United States. Funeral services will be conducted from Monte Vista Church of The Brethren, 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Robert Jones and Rev. J. Willard Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 South Main Street, Rocky Mount. on June 20, 1995.2
