Noah Conner Spangler Noah C. Spangler, whose home has been in West Virginia for several years, committed suicide Monday night, while at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henderson Spangler, near Red Oak Grove, on a visit. He had been despondent for sometime, but no one thought that he contemplated taking his life. He used a shot gun and had gone to the basement of the home, where he had pulled off a shoe and after placing the muzzle of the gun to his forehead, pulled the trigger with his toe. The load of shot tore away a great part of his head, blowing his brains out. He died instantly. He was prepared for burial and laid to rest Thursday afternoon near his home.5 He was buried at Lampey-Martin-Spangler, 799 Hale Road NE, Floyd Co., Virginia.6,7 He Noah Conner Spangler was born in Floyd County, Virginia. On March 23, 1899 he married Maleria Ella Howery, daughter of John H. Howery and Mary Elizabeth Gray. Ella was also born in Floyd County, Virginia. Noah was a coal miner, part time farmer and part time salesman. In some of his letters to his mother he wrote about selling Sayman products and teaching singing in a local Primitive Baptist Church. Noah, thru his letters, appeared to be a very religious man searching for the true meaning of the scriptures. It is believed that Noah suffered from the black lung disease and the suffering from this disease and the economic times was so severe that he took his own life at the age of fifty one years. On his head stone are engraved his last words written to his mother "My sufferings have been truly severe so at my grave shed not a tear". Noah is buried in the Family Cemetery near his father and mother and his infant son. Ella Spangler raised five children during the many extended absences of her husband Noah. She purchased a small farm in Salem, Virginia. She enjoyed handcrafts and gave each of her grandchildren silk quilts. She made needlepoint items large enough to cover sofas. Ella died at the age of eighty nine years and is buried in Cedar Lawn Cemetery Roanoke, Virginia.2 He was born on March 6, 1875 at Floyd Co., Virginia; His death certificate has a birth year of 1876.8,6,7 He married Valerie Ellen "Ella" Howery, daughter of John Harman Howery and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gray, on March 23, 1899 at Floyd Co., Virginia.9 Noah Conner Spangler died on June 28, 1926 at Little River, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 51.5,6,7

Roscoe Conkling Conner was born on November 30, 1876 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.2 He died on May 16, 1898 at Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida, at age 21.4,3 He When the Spanish-American war broke out Company F volunteered, and at the time was commanded by Captain R. Frank Taylor, with James O. B. Palmer as first lieutenant and Homer G. Hogan, second lieutenant. Company F was mustered into United States service May 12, 1898, and was mustered out at Jacksonville on December 15, the same year, when the members returned home and practically disbanded. The company was later reorganized with Henry L. Francis as captain. Some years later he was succeeded by Captain Lin G. Figgat, and when America, entered the World war, Captain Figgat took his command and went to France. Captain Figgat died about a year ago. Captain Francis is still living. When Company the F volunteered for service in the Spanish-American war, and an acceptance was received by the war department together with instruction to mobilize the company immediately, a cold rain was falling. Captain R. Frank Taylor called his corporals and instructed them to serve notice on each individual member of the company to report forthwith for duty at the armory. Among those called was Corporal Roscoe Conkling Conner, who due to an all service in the inclement weather contracted a severe cold which resulted the following day in an attack of double pneumonia. The following Monday, Company F received orders to leave for Richmond for mobilization at Camp Lee. The day following the departure of his company, Corporal Conner died. This was the only death to occur in the company during the nine months of service, including mobilization at both Camp Lee and Jacksonville. One other member of the company, Frank J. Jack, a resident of Bedford, was stricken with a fever while his command was in quarters at Richmond, and he was confined in the camp hospital for quite awhile. When the company was ordered to move to Jacksonville, Private Jack's condition was such as to preclude any possibility of his going to the southern city. Later he was given a disability discharge and returned to his home at Vinton. So far as ascertainable no casualties occurred during the company's term of enlistment. Company G lost one man by drowning while bathing at the beach in Jacksonville. This was Edward M. Carr, a son of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Carr. His remains were brought to Roanoke and he was given a military burial, the remains being interred in Andrew's cemetery. When Company mustered Success out of service at Jacksonville on December 15, 1898, a call was made on members of the company who would volunteer to enlist for a period of three years in the regular army for service in the Philippine islands, At least two members of the / company volunteered for this service--Lieut. George H. Bentley V. P. Moir, the latter, an attorney at law, who had just graduated and had come to Roanoke to establish a practice. After quite a period of service Mr. Bentley had been promoted to first lieutenant and while leading a squad of American soldiers through the Philippine jungles he was slain with a bolo hurled by the hand of a Filipino insurrecto. Lieutenant Bentley was a handsome young man, and every inch a soldier. He was exceedingly popular in army circles and as a member of Company G had legions of friends in Roanoke, both in and out of military circles. His remains were brought back to Pulaski county, of which he was a native, and buried in the cemetery on the Cloyd farm just north of Dublin. The funeral obsequies were attended by his old military company, and he was buried with military honors, The case of V. Percy Moir was different. Recruits were needed to fill out the and he with about 40 others entered Company G as privates. While en route to Richmond he was approached by an officer of the company and asked why he had chosen army life rather than to establish himself in law. Mr. Moir replied: "I following a hunch that will mean something better for me than the fate of a struggling young lawyer." He served his enlistment or a portion of it when he received an honorable discharge. It seems there were few able lawyers in the islands, and in a short time he was made a federal district judge comparable with the judges serving in the states. Judge Moir remained in the Philippines some 18 or 20 years when he returned to the United States. He came back to Roanoke and died about eight years ago. He was a native of Patrick county. Dr. Richard Gordon Simmons, a charter member of after ex service of several Company G, years, was commissioned a captain and assistant surgeon in the military forces of the state and was assigned to duty with the Second Virginia Infantry Regiment in which capacity served until 1898, when the regiment entered the service of the government in Spanish-American war. Within a few weeks Dr. Simmons was detached from the Second Virginia Regiment and was made assistant to the chief surgeon of the Army Corps, commanded by General Fitzhugh Lee, his duties being administrative and executive. At the conclusion of the Spanish-American war he declined to remain longer in the service of the government and returned to Roanoke to resume the practice of medicine. He is now 71 years of age. on December 13, 1936.3
