     John Harvey Gearheart was buried at Gearheart Family Farm, Mattox Mountain, Floyd Co., Virginia.3 He Served in Company I, 54th Virginia Infantry, Conferderate States Army. John Harvey Gearhart, along with his brother (William Riley) and serveral other men from Floyd County deserted the Army shortly before the end of the Civil War. They walked home to Floyd County from North Carolina. They said the war was a lost cause, and it seemed no use to keep on fighting. The army sent people to bring them back, dead or alive. They was hid in a pit, under a brushpile in a field that their father was clearing. Their father slipped them food and water at night, they hid there until the end of the war.2 He was born in January, 1842 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,5 He married Massie Mahala Wilson, daughter of Isaac Wilson and Elsa/Aisley "Elsie" Cole, on August 20, 1868 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1 John Harvey Gearheart died in 1901 at Mattox Mountain, Floyd Co., Virginia; Died of tuberculosis.2

He also is survived by his maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Weddle of Floyd, and his paternal grandfather, James Early Conner of Check. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 2, 1996, at Floyd Baptist Church, with Dr. Alton Griffin and the Rev. Joe Womack officiating. Interment will follow in Wilson Cemetery at Check. Friends may call after 12 noon Sunday at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd, where the family will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on December 1, 1996.1

Mr. Pugh served proudly in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was Manager at Magic City Ford Used Car Department for many many years before retiring and running his own dealership the Kar Korral on Williamson Road, Roanoke. He was also a Master Mason of Lakeland Masonic Lodge 190, Roanoke. During his spare time he loved to putter and garden on his farm in Copper Hill. A very loving father, brother, and friend who is going to be missed by all. Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Debra Layman and husband, Jon of Roanoke, Va., Pamela Hatter and husband, Matthew of Troutville, Va; sisters, Mary Board and husband, Allen of Roanoke, Va., Kathryn Naff of Ohio; his best companion, Banks Conner of Roanoke; brother and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Evelyn Conner of Roanoke, and Louise Conner. Along with a host of other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society in Mr. Pugh's name. A funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, March 18, 2019 at Simpson Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Austin officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on March 16, 2019.3

Interment will be in the Aldridge Family Cemetery (next to the Old Copper Hill Methodist Church). The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sat. at Wood Funeral Home. on March 29, 2002.1
