He fought at First Manasses and died in a Charlottesville hospital of typhoid fever on August 27, 1861 while en route from Manasses Junction to Lynchburg. James and his best friend, Samuel Abbott, enlisted in the Confederate Army at the same time. James made Samuel promise that if he did not return from the war that Samuel would take care of Lydia and "Little Bet." Annie was born in Montgomery County on July 18, 1922, the eldest of eight children born to the late Ralph E. Conner and Alpha King Conner. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 52 years, Paul T. Huffman; four brothers, Roy Conner, Raymond Conner, Wilmer Conner and James Conner. She was a member of the Grace Trinity Church, Buena Vista and held several public jobs in Roanoke County and also in Buena Vista. After her marriage to Paul she moved from Roanoke County to Buena Vista and worked while Paul was serving in World War II. Her last place of employment was Bernson Silk Mills. Left to cherish her memories are two daughters and sons-in-laws, Barbara and Paul Majors Sr., and Darlene and Robert Sloan all of Buena Vista; four beloved grandchildren and their spouses, James and Marlene Shafer, Amy and Chad Huffman, Tammy Shafer and Paul and Dawn Majors Jr. She was to be the great-grandmother of two precious children to be born in September and December. Also surviving are a sister, Ruby Gibson of Roanoke; and two brothers, Howard Conner of Montvale, and Douglas Conner of Clarksville, Tenn; a special friend and companion Dottie Lynn; and a devoted nephew, Richard Garrett, and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 1999 from the Grace Trinity Church with Pastors Jim Reynolds and Bruce Clark officiating with burial to follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, May 14, 1999 from 7 to 8p.m at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Service, Buena Vista. on May 14, 1999.3

Conner; two sons and daughter-in-law, Elmer A. and Roberta L. Conner, Franklin Co., John Edward "Eddie" Conner, Blacksburg; two daughters and son-in-law, Ruth E. and Mike E. Hawkins, Roanoke, Nancy C. Linkous, Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Susan L. Bell, David Linkous, Dallas Richards, and Andrew Conner; two great- granddaughters, Elizabeth and Sarah Bell; three brothers, Howard Conner, James Conner both of Roanoke, Douglas Conner, Clarksville, Tenn; two sisters, Annie Huffman, Buena Vista, Ruby Gibson, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, August 13, at the Gospel Baptist Church, near Dixie Caverns with the Rev. Samuel J. Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in the Piedmont Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem Friday, 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on August 12, 1994.3
