During the war, he served in Japan and the South Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. Later he served state side as a training officer during the Korean War. Mr. Armstrong was Honorably Discharged in 1952. Mr. Armstrong married Ruth Thomas, April 6, 1947. He worked for Methodist Hospital as a construction supervisor, retiring in 1988. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dan Armstrong, Joe Armstrong and William Armstrong as well as an infant sister, Mary Anna Armstrong. Survivors include his wife Ruth Armstrong, son Tommy Dale Armstrong and wife Elissa, Brazil, grandson Brian Armstrong and wife Misty, Center Point, five great grandchildren: Tyler Armstrong, Tori Armstrong, Jase Armstrong and Bryan Bell all of Center Point, Cody Armstrong, Oklahoma City, Okla., two nieces and one nephew: George Armstrong, Calif., Norma Armstrong, California and Virginia Armstrong, Columbus, Ohio. He had been a patient there since Sept. 7, 2003. Born May 31, 1929, in Glasgow, Ky., he was the son of Norval Pickett Sr. and Willie Mabel Choate Pickett. He was in the Brazil High School Class of 1947. On Aug. 26, 1946, he married Mary Margaret Thomas Pickett; she survives. He was well known as the mayor of Brazil from 1972-1980 and again, 1984-1992. He was instrumental in Great Dane choosing Brazil as a plant site. He founded Craig Park on the west side of Brazil. He was known as the friend of the underdog and the common man. He annually hosted a senior citizens dinner at the Brazil Armory, including entertainment by Phil Silvers and others. As a young man, he served as chief of police for five years and operated a brick plant in Albion, Ill., for several years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Mt. Carmel, Ill., a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge; a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police; past-president of the Clay County Chamber of Commerce; member of the Kiwanis and Ducks Unlimited. He also owned and operated Pickett's Bargain and Auction Barn and Twigg Industries. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1972 by Gov. Edgar Whitcomb; the Kentucky Colonel award in 1966 by Gov. Edward Breadthitt; and the Honorary Lt. Col. Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia by Gov. George Wallace. Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Pickett of Brazil; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Ray Marcia Potee Pickett, of Terre Haute; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret "Margie" and Scott Cooper and husband of Zionsville, Ind; grandchildren, Amanda Biedess and husband, Matthew, of Indianapolis; Jordan Pickett of Bloomington, Craig Cooper and Carson Cooper of Zionsville; three sisters, Betty Porter and husband, Mike, of Terre Haute, Carolyn O'Rourke and husband, Jim, of Fort Wayne, Anita Kidwell and husband, Tom, of Brazil; two brothers, Jim and Charlotte Pickett of Brazil and Bob and Judi Pickett of Brazil; many nieces; nephews; extended family; and a long-time friend, Norma Humphrey, and her family. He was born Jan. 23, 1944, in Clay County the son of Alvin and Norma Thomas Morlan. He worked for many years at J.I. Case as a fork-lift operator and also in production. Survivors include his son, Randy Morlan and wife Julie; daughter, Kendra Morlan; two grandsons, Chance Morlan and Bryton Morlan; the mother of his children, Mary Ellen Morlan all of Terre Haute; two brothers, Gary Morlan, Sr. of Brazil and Clarence Morlan and wife Julie of Carbon; several nieces and nephews and other extended family. He served in the U.S. Army based in Germany following his graduation. He graduated from Rosedale High School. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. In the past he enjoyed farming, following college basketball and playing softball and horseshoes. Burial will follow at Clear Run Cemetery in Bridgeton. Military graveside services will be provided by the American Legion and VFW. on September 22, 2007.5
