Mr. Elmore signed a baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers, but decided to pursue a career in public education. From 1930 to 1934, he taught history, government and English at Tazewell High School, where he also was a coach. Mr. Elmore completed a master's degree in 1934 at the University of Virginia. He did additional graduate work at the University of Southern California. Mr. Elmore served as principal of Gretna High School in Pittsylvania County from 1934 to 1937. Survivors include his wife, Mary Christian Royall Elmore; and two daughters, Janie Jo Vansant of Virginia Beach and Kathryn Rice of Richmond.
