Albert Raymond Conner was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,12,4 He married Ruth Melvina Lucas.1,13,14,12,3,15,16 Albert Raymond Conner was born on October 21, 1919 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,12 He ALBERT CONNER CONFESSES TO SHREWSBURY MURDER WHEN FACED WITH LIE DETECTOR - Princeton, Feb 1 - Faced with a lie detector which had been brought from Charleston by State Police earlier in the day, Albert Raymond Conner, 30 year old resident of Stumpy Bottom confessed at 8:15 Monday that he murdered Canada Shrewsbury early Sunday morning under the bridge over the Virginian railway. This brought to a quick ending a mysterious case on which state police and county officials had been working almost continuously for 36 hours. Shrewsbury's body was found about 6 p.m. Sunday by W. A. Wiley of Princeton, a track walker for the Virginian railroad. It was leaning against concrete cribbing flanking the road from Mercer street to the Virginian shops. There were bold stains on the cribbing and on the tracks and ties about 30 feet away and blood stains on the ground in between, thus indicating that Shrewsbury might have been hit by a train and crawled to the spot where he died. His pocketbook containing $370 was found on his person but no papers to identify him and it was not until some hours later that a son, hearing a newscast telling of the finding of an unidentified body, went to the Fredeking-Seaver Funeral Directory and recognized his father. Checking into Shrewsbury whereabouts the preceding night police found that he had gone to a dance near Spanishburg with the wife of Conner. Sunday afternoon police took Conner, his wife Ruth, her brother Bill Lucas and Hazel Caldwell into custody and began questioning them. Lucas and the Conner girl were at the Conner home Sunday morning, but their stories were contradictory and Monday the lie detector was sent for. Before it had been used Conner told officers that Shrewsbury and Ruth Conner came to the Conner home on Rosalind avenue where Conner had been all evening. Shrewsbury left about an hour later and Conner followed him to the underpass on Rogers avenue where he accosted him and warned him about his attentions to his wife. Conner said that Shrewsbury started to attack him and hit him in the head with a piece of pipe, after which Shrewsbury started across the fields towards Princeton, The place where his body was found was three-quarters away for the point where Conner said the fight occurred. Shrewsbury's pocketbook contained about $370, but his son Rupert said he usually carried about $1200 on his person, and persons at the dance said that he was "flashing" a big roll of money there. The lie detector, brought here by State Police Spl. N. C. Reger from Charleston, and making its initial appearance in Mercer county, was used after Conner confessed, on the Lucas and Caldwell girl and it showed that their statements, which corroborated Conner's confession, were not lies. Mrs. Conner was also questioned late Monday night. Members of the Conner family said that Walter Burton, Princeton criminal lawyer would be retained to defend him. Funeral services for Shrewsbury were held at 2 p.m. this afternoon at the Presbyterian church at Lashmeet with the Rev. Z. F. Mayberry and the Rev. manning in charge. Interment will be in Resthaven cemetery. The body was taken from the Fredeking-Seaver Funeral Directory to the home of his son, Rupert on the Beckley road where he also lived. He is survived by his wife, two daughters Mrs. Pauline Hughes of Beckley, Mrs. Louise Whittaker of Matoka; two sons, Paul Shrewsbury of Matoka and Rupert of Princeton. Mr. Shrewsbury was born in Rich Creek, Va. April 2, 1882, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shrewsbury. He had lived in Princeton for about three years. Pallbearers were Edward Blankenship, Wilfred Calfee, John Keatley, Charles Blankenship, Jimmy Mills, Azie Miller, Robert Taylor and Dale Ferguson. His grandchildren were flower bearers. on February 2, 1949.1 He Princeton, Feb 2 - Albert Raymond Conner, who confessed to the murder Sunday morning of Canada Huston Shrewsbury, was take from the Mercer county jail Tuesday afternoon by state trooper Burner at 4:45 and arraigned before Magistrate E. Dale Bailey. He was accompanied by his father and Roscoe Pendelton, former prosecutor of Mercer county. Conner waived trail and was bound over to the grand jury. Conner's wife her brother Bill Lucas and Hazel Caldwell, a close friend of Lucas, who were also being held, were released from jail. Bond was fixed by Judge F. Morton Wagner at $5,000 and was signed by Conner's parents, C. A. and Amelia Conner of Black Lick. on February 3, 1949.7 He CONNER CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER - Princeton, Nov 10 - After deliberating all Thursday morning and for about an hour after the noon recess, the jury in the Conner case returned a verdict of guilty of Voluntary manslaughter, which carries with it a prison sentence of one to five years in the state penitentiary, Defense attorneys Roscoe H. Pendelton, former Mercer counter prosecuting attorney, and J. S. Kahle immediately moved to set the verdict side and grant a new trial and Judge F. Morton Wagner set Monday, November 26 as the date for hearing on this petition. The trial, one of the longest and most sensational in the annals of the county, started on Wednesday, November 2, and about 125 witnesses were heard. The jury got the case at 4:30 Wednesday evening, deliberated until 9:30 Wednesday night and for about five more hours on Thursday before reaching a verdict. Conner, and employee of the Celanese plant, about 30 years of age, was charged with the murder of Canada Huston Shrewsbury, age 79, on the night of January 30, 1949, and was indicted by the grand jury in the April term of court. He admitted having struck the deceased man in the head with an 11 inch iron bolt about a quarter mile from his home, but said his victim walked away from him across the fields. His frozen body was found about half a mile away about 6 o'clock the next morning by a track walker for the Virginian railroad lying in a half-filled ditch near the bridge over the tracks. Conner stated that he had struck Shrewsbury because of the latter's attention to Mrs. Conner, but the State contended that the defendant knew and approved of his wife's affair with the elderly man and contended that robbery was the motive, but a missing roll of bills, supposedly containing about $1200 was said to have been in Shrewsbury's pockets at the time he met his death. A highlight of the trial was the 101-page deposition of Mrs. Conner, taken at her home on October 28 by Judge F. Morton Wagner and attorneys for the State and defense. Mrs. Conner is pregnant and doctors advised that she not be called to the witness stand. on November 11, 1949.17 He Princeton - Albert Raymond Conner was committed to the Mercer County jail this morning to start serving his sentence after the State Supreme Court refused to allow a writ of error on February 5. Conner had been found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Canada H. Shewsbury last year. on April 17, 1951.18 He died on November 27, 2005 at Lerona, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 86.2,12 He PRINCETON — Albert Raymond Conner, 86, of Roseland Avenue, Princeton, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 27, 2005 at the Harmony House, Lerona.
