He passed away suddenly at his home in Nelson on October 7, 1971, at the age of 72. On May 28, 1932 he was married to Helen L. Ruhga at Mankato, Kansas. To this union were born three daughters. Duke, as he was known, came to Nelson in early childhood and lived all his life in Nelson. He served in France during World War I and later became a member of the American Legion. He worked as a telephone lineman and retired in 1955 due to his health. Duke was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harry Lee, one sister, Fern Daniels (sic) and one grandson, Tommy Lee Bise. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, JoAnn Fleharty of Hays, Kansas, Donna Lee Bise of Wichita, Kansas and Barbara Jean Ittner of Columbia, Missouri; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Carl Gourlay of Nelson and Mrs. Freeda Brown of Brewster, Kansas and one brother, William L. Eckles of Nelson. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9, 1971 at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church, Nelson. Rev. Victor Schwarz officiated. Casket bearers were Paul Littrell, Jim Murphy, Henry Dillman, Chas. Larison, Clay Myers and Robert Myers. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery, Nelson. Mary Anna Overby Havens, 77, of Pearisburg, VA, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Heritage Hall- Rich Creek. She was born September 5, 1939 in Smyth County, the daughter of the late Noah & Florence Thomas Overbay. She loved to sew. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 47 years, Sidney Estel Havens. A graveside service is planned at Morning Star Cemetery, Bland, VA.⁴ Her married name was Reed.¹ She was born on September 5, 1939 at Smyth Co., Virginia.^2,3,4 She died on November 24, 2016 at Rich Creek, Giles Co., Virginia, at age 77.^3,4

He is survived by his parents and one sister, Teri Lynn; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D.D. Eckles of Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Bise of North Platte; great grandparents, Mrs. J.T. Bise of Ruskin and C.J. Rugha of Nelson. Services were held Saturday afternoon with burial in the Nelson cemetery (sic). Those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Bise and Barbara and Mrs. Carl Thompson of North Platte, Mrs. J.T. Bise of Ruskin, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ocoback and Ruth of Republic, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Homer Biltoft and family of Nora, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Gourlay of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Mabel King of Superior, and Mrs. Bill Eckles jr. of Beatrice. on May 31, 1956.¹
