He was 93. Melvin was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Lawrence, Neb., to Fredrick William and Ella D. (Schleif) Brennfoerder. He graduated from Nelson High School, Nelson, Neb. He attended Kearney State Teachers College, Kearney, Neb., where he studied business. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a superintendent after 38 years of service. He was a member of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). In the early 1980s, he came to Miami from Omaha, Neb. He had served as an Evangelistic Minister in various churches throughout his life. He was a past elder of First Christian Church in Miami, and was a member of New Hope Christian Church in Miami. On June 5, 1938, he married Ilah Mae Ruhga in Nelson. She preceded him in death on Sept. 11, 1990. He was also preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Brennfoerder on Nov. 27, 2005. Survivors include three sons, Gordon Brennfoerder, Dwight Brennfoerder and his wife, Diane, all of Joplin, and Lynn Brennfoerder and his wife, Mary, of Miami; one sister, Myrtle Worley, of Nelson; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami. The funeral will be Thursday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Christian Church in Miami. Ministers Leon Weece and Gary Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons and husbands of granddaughters, Cody Brennfoerder, Robert Brennfoerder Dodson, Brian Brennfoerder, Todd Brennfoerder, Kent Hudspeth, Mike McKinney, Jeff Johnston and Shane Brennfoerder. The family suggest memorials to First Christian Church, of Miami, or New Hope Christian Church, of Miami in memory of Mr. Brennfoerder.

She was employed as a registered nurse with St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin for the last 20 years, working in the Emergency Room, Hospice, the CVICU unit and Radiology. Additional survivors include two daughters, Ginnie Hudspeth and husband, Kent, Joplin, and Jil McKinney and husband, Mike, Texarkana, Texas; one brother, Roy Baker, Cedar Creek, Mo; two stepsisters, Carol Scott, Grayson, Ky., and Vicki Gilbert, Kokamo, Ind; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at College Heights Christian Church with Randy Gariss, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Elders of the church will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to the College Heights Christian Church Building Program. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary, of Joplin.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla., on Feb. 19, 1942. He served in World War II in the Pacific in the 105th Artillery Division. He was stationed in Australia and Tokyo. His love of horses stemmed the Army, where he was among the last of the cavalry troops before the military became motorized. He married Elsie M. Drudik on Dec. 4, 1951, in Kearney. Survivors include his wife; one son, Dick L. of Ord; two daughters, Sue (Mrs. Mike) Hagmann of Grand Island and Pat (Mrs. Wally) Veburg of Hordville; three grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and two sisters, Helen Eckles of Nelson and Evelyn Borge of Edgar. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ila Brennfoerder. on April 21, 2001.6

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the Heartland Assembly of God Church at Ord. The Rev. Thomas Burkholder will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson. Military rites will be conducted by the Nelson Eren N Geran American Legion Post No. 187. He entered the U.S. Army in 1971 and served until 1973. He returned to Nebraska and went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation in Superior. He then transferred to Ord where he worked as a surveyor for the Calamus and Davis Creek irrigation projects. He then moved to Oregon and worked as a dam tender at the Prineville Reservoir. Before he retired, he worked at the Bonney Dam at Idalia, Colo. While working for the Bureau of Reclamation, Dick received many awards for his innovative ideas. Dick was a member of the Heartland Assembly of God Church in Ord. He enjoyed horses and gun shows. Dick also loved photography and had received awards for his photos. Survivors include his mother, Elsie Ruhga of Grand Island; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sue and Mike Hagmann of Grand Island and Pat and Wally Veburg of Hordville; and a nephew and niece, Matthew and Allison Veburg. Dick was preceded in death by his father, Marvin. Memorials may be given to the Heartland Assembly of God Church. on July 13, 2015.2

Evelyn Cleora Ruhga Evelyn Ruhga Brennfoerder, youngest child of Charles and Bertha Ruhga, was born on her parent’s farm west of Angus, NE on December 29, 1919. She departed this life on Friday, February 6, 2015 at the age of 95 years at the Rosebrook Care Center in Edgar, NE. Evelyn attended Stone School north of their home and graduated from Nelson High School in 1936. Evelyn was an operator for the Lincoln Telephone Company at Nelson until her marriage to Arthur Brennfoerder February 10, 1941 at Omaha, Ne. Three children came to bless their home. They all became members of the Church of Christ. They lived on a farm near Edgar until the death of her husband. Evelyn was employed at the Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Lincoln for several months, then at the Telephone company there and in Hastings for several years. She actively helped Arthur with raising the children, farming, gardening and yard work on the farm. She enjoyed reading, writing letters, and teaching in Sunday school, camps and bible school, and hearing from and about her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1928, her father in 1971, her husband in 1973. She also was preceded by granddaughter Brenda Glass, and Duane Glass’ wife Kendra. Also preceding Evelyn were her two sisters, Helen Eckles & Ilah Brennfoerder, and her brother Marvin Ruhga. Her survivors include daughter Dorthy Glass, and her two sons Duane, and his 2 children Sara and Caleb; and Gene, and son Ryan; Luke Jaramillo, son of late Brenda (Glass) & Danny Jaramillo - all of Topeka, KS. Her oldest son, Gary and his wife Marilyn of Edgar, and their 4 children: DudLee, and his wife Debbie of Edgar, and 2 children Quintin, of Lincoln, and Kelsey Hergenreder and husband Jeffery of Fort Riley. Melody, and husband Jessy Jauregui, and their 3 children Austin, Ashley and Cameron of Mead, CO. Brad and his wife, Kim and 3 children Jordan, Alyssa, and Zachary of Edgar, and Stan, and his wife Kathy, and daughter Breanna of Edgar. Her youngest son, Leroy, and his wife Roxann of Argyle, TX and their 2 children, Jennifer and husband Barry Fox, and 2 daughters: Audrey and Addyson of Argyle, TX; and son Andrew Seoul, South Korea. She will be missed by many other friends and relatives. Funeral services will be held this Monday 10:30 AM February 9, 2015 at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar, NE. Officiating minister will be Paul Julian. Burial will be held at the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar, NE. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 pm to 7 pm with the family present from 3 pm to6 pm. Surviving at the time of his death are his wife, Evelyn; his daughter, Dorthy and her husband, Ken and their three children, Marion, Eugene and Brenda of Lincoln; his son, Gary and his wife, Marilyn and their four children, Dud Lee, Melody, Brad and Stan of Fairfield; and his son, Leroy and his wife, Roxann of Lincoln; his three brothers, Albert of Lincoln, Ernest of Fairfield and Harley of Hastings. He was preceeded in death by his parents and two infant sisters. Funeral services were Tuesday, December 4, at the Urbauer Funeral Chapel in Edgar with interment in the Edgar Cemetery. on December 13, 1973.1

Malethee/Maletha Pauline Link Pauline Link Reed, 97, of Check, VA., sadly went home to be with her lord on Sunday August 27, 2023. She passed away at peace in her home of 79 years. She was born on March 26, 1926, in West Virginia and grew up learning and doing the hard work of homesteading. Pauline later in life started working at Skyline Sportswear as a seamstress. She loved to knit and sewed many blankets for all of her family. She loved to cook and tend to her garden for as long as she was able. Pauline was a outstanding woman to her family and her church, The Litte White Church. Pauline was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard Reed; son, Carlos Reed; parents, Mamie and Henry Link; sisters, Catherine Vest, Maleta Walters; brothers, Henry Clay, Waskey Link (Infant). She leaves behind her sisters, Patricia Nichols (Freddie), Etta Mae Hall; her beloved daughter, Carolyn McPeak; two grandchildren, Ken Reed and Aaron Reed; three great grandchildren, Kaleb Reed, Alexis Reed (Tyler) and Tiara Reed (Tristan); and one great great granddaughter, Oakley Raye Thorne. Special thank you to Gentiva Hospice for coming and helping us in her last days. Especially thankful for Ireland, Nicole, Karen, and Brian. Interment will follow in Restvale cemetery.5 She was buried at Restvale Cemetery, 7529 Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.5 She was born on March 26, 1926 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,12,3,5 She married Howard Carter Reed, son of Roscoe Cecil Reed and Mary Elizabeth Conner, on April 13, 1943 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,7,3,2,8,13,5 As of April 13, 1943,her married name was Reed.
