Poff, of Mount Airy, Rt. 1, reportedly had been riding around and drinking most of the night with two teen-age companions. One companion, Jerry Lee Testerman, 19, of Mount Airy, a restaurant worker, was arrested an hour after the 11:15 p.m. shooting and charged with murder, the sheriff's department said. Testerman is being held without bail in the Surry County jail at Mount Airy, Deputy Sheriff N. A. Lowe said Poff was riding in a car driven by Ray Moore, 17, who lived with the Poff family in the Oak Grove community. Describes Shooting Lowe said Moore gave this version of the shooting: The three had been drinking heavily and Moore and Poff got into an argument with Testerman and took him to his home. After dropping him off, they parked in a supermarket lot near the Testerman home and sat there about an hour talking. They saw Testerman, running toward them, the car and drove onto the highway. As they drove onto the road, Testerman ran alongside the car and called Poff's name. As Poff turned, Moore said, Testerman him. shot, bullet from a .38-caliber revolver entered Poff's mouth and was removed from the back his head near the left ear. The deputy said another shot apparently was fired into the car. He said Testerman admits firing 8 shot but contends he did not hit Poff. Poff was dead on arrival Northern Surry Hospital here. The weapon not been found. Lowe said Testerman apparently fled on foot after the incident. He was arrested about 12:30 a.m. after Moore reported the shooting to the sheriff's department. Moore came here several months ago from Newport News, Va., and had been living with Poffs, Lowe said. Poff was born in Surry County to Sydney and Stella McHone Poff, who survive. Other survivors are three brothers, Douglas, Robert and Ronnie Poff, all of the home, and sisters, Mrs. Donald Wilcox Mount Airy, Rt. 2, and Miss Joann Poff of the home. Burial will be in the Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. on May 12, 1962.³

He is survived by his wife, Birda Bond Poff of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Dreama and Chad Gwyn; a son and daughter-in-law, Jacky and Emily Poff; a step daughter, Patricia Ann Edwards; a step-son, Wiley Guynn; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Shelby and Donald Wilcox; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Linda Poff. In addition to his parents, Mr. Poff was preceded in death by a son, James Douglas Poff, Jr; a sister, Joann Morris; brothers, Robert Poff, and Bobby Poff, a step son, Joseph Marty Guynn.
