She is survived by her husband of 63 years, William Nelson; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bill Polhamus; grandsons, Brian and Scott Polhamus; a sister, Juanita Stanley; nieces, Sharon Mitchell, Patricia (Edward) Resendez and Cindy (John)) Bougeois; a nephew, Michael (Jane) Morris, all of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Marie Peterson, of Goldsboro, N.C. and Helen (John) Sorrow, of Covington, Ga; and brothers-in-law, Ellis Nelson , of Greensboro, N.C., Robert (Betty) Nelson , of Sneads Ferry, N.C. and Jimmy Nelson , of Goldsboro, N.C; and a number of other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a 1945 graduate of Jefferson High School, where she was girls tennis champion. She was retired from the Veterans Administration Regional Office Legal Division, with 30 years of federal service. She was a charter member of Grandin Court Baptist Church and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday at Oakey's South Chapel with Dr. Kevin Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grandin Court Baptist Church, 2660 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24018. on December 25, 2010.7

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel.      Earl Banks Reed was born on February 2, 1930 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,3,4,11 He married Shirley Virginia Wilkerson on June 4, 1977 at King George, King George Co., Virginia.4 Earl Banks Reed was buried on May 28, 2024 at Virginia.11 He Earl Reed, Feb 2, 1930 - May 28, 2024. Earl Reed, of Floyd, VA, formerly of Dahlgren, passed away peacefully on the 28th of May, at the age of 94. Born on February 2, 1930, Earl led a life marked by dedication, service, and a passion for learning and craftsmanship. Earl joined the Navy from 1950 to 1952, and served aboard the USS Macon. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1957, and used his mechanical engineering degree to aid in aviation advancements at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent, MD. In 1961, Earl joined the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, where he worked as an aerospace engineer for Flight Systems with notable contributions to the Mercury and Gemini Space Programs. In September 1977, Earl transferred to Dahlgren, VA, continued his work as a mechanical engineer and retired after 33 years of service. Earl obtained his private pilots license and owned his own aircraft, was an avid woodworker, crafting beautiful grandfather clocks and even a hammer dulcimer. A talented musician, Earl enjoyed playing the dulcimer regularly at the annual music festival in Galax. He loved animals and enjoyed their cat, Josie for over 20 years. Earl is survived by his wife, Shirley of 47 years; and many family members and friends who will miss his kindness and enthusiasm for life. on June 2, 2024.11

Alva Pauline McDermitt died on July 22, 2022 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 93.4 She Alva M. Reed, October 29, 1928 - July 22, 2022. Alva M. Reed, 93, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Eugene (Gene) Reed; one sister; and two brothers. Alva is survived by her son, Michael Reed; daughter, Pat Thomas and husband, Dwayne Thomas; one grandchild, J.W.      Owen Warren Reed Owen Warren ( O.W. ) Reed, age 80 years, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 9, 2020. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia, a son of the late Camden G. Reed and Nellie Updike Reed having grown up in the Garden City area of Roanoke and was a 1959 graduate of Jefferson Senior High School. O.W. retired from General Electric after 37 years of service and was known to be able to fix anything and had his own appliance shop in addition to his working at GE. He was a great friend to many and was also known for his calming demeanor. Family meant everything to O.W. and he was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Judith S. Reed. His three children, Carol R. McGuire, Mark W. Reed, and Julie R. Pietrzyk. His 13 grandchildren, Kelly, Nick, Spencer, Katie, Jessica, Jim, Hannah, Solona, Emry, Riley, Benson, Adler and Lane. And 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace (Gene) Reed. He is also survived by his brothers, Earl Reed, Glenn Reed, and Jimmy Reed as well as two sisters, Shirley Reed Pinson and Nancy Reed Flowers. He also had numerous nieces, nephews and many other loving relatives and friends. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at noon on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 in Evergreen Burial Park with the Rev. C. Nelson Harris officiating. Due to the current COVID -19 situation, social distancing guidelines will be observed.5 He was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.5 He was born on November 17, 1939 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,3 He married Judith Ann "Judy" "JuJu" Smith on March 1, 1963 at Roanoke, Virginia.6,1,2,4,10 Owen Warren Reed died on May 9, 2020 at Virginia at age 80.5
