She was a 1945 graduate of Jefferson High School, where she was girls tennis champion. She was retired from the Veterans Administration Regional Office Legal Division, with 30 years of federal service. She was a charter member of Grandin Court Baptist Church and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Monday at Oakey's South Chapel with Dr. Kevin Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. He loved classical music and enjoyed painting. He was an active member of Grandin Court Baptist Church and a member of BPOE 197. Earl Reed, of Floyd, VA, formerly of Dahlgren, passed away peacefully on the 28th of May, at the age of 94. Born on February 2, 1930, Earl led a life marked by dedication, service, and a passion for learning and craftsmanship. Earl joined the Navy from 1950 to 1952, and served aboard the USS Macon. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1957, and used his mechanical engineering degree to aid in aviation advancements at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent, MD. In 1961, Earl joined the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, where he worked as an aerospace engineer for Flight Systems with notable contributions to the Mercury and Gemini Space Programs. In September 1977, Earl transferred to Dahlgren, VA, continued his work as a mechanical engineer and retired after 33 years of service. Earl obtained his private pilots license and owned his own aircraft, was an avid woodworker, crafting beautiful grandfather clocks and even a hammer dulcimer. A talented musician, Earl enjoyed playing the dulcimer regularly at the annual music festival in Galax. He loved animals and enjoyed their cat, Josie for over 20 years. Earl is survived by his wife, Shirley of 47 years; and many family members and friends who will miss his kindness and enthusiasm for life. on June 2, 2024.¹¹

     Alva Pauline McDermitt was buried at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, 7271 Cloverdale Road, Cloverdale, Botetourt Co., Virginia.⁴ She was born on October 29, 1928 at Blue Ridge, Botetourt Co., Virginia.^1,4,5 She married Wallace Eugene "Gene" Reed, son of Camden Gobell Reed and Nellie Glenn Updike, on May 21, 1955 at Blue Ridge, Botetourt Co., Virginia.^2,3,4 As of May 21, 1955,her married name was Reed. Alva Pauline McDermitt died on July 22, 2022 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 93.⁴ She Alva M. Reed, October 29, 1928 - July 22, 2022. Alva M. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Eugene (Gene) Reed; one sister; and two brothers.      Owen Warren Reed Owen Warren ( O.W. ) Reed, age 80 years, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 9, 2020. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia, a son of the late Camden G. Reed and Nellie Updike Reed having grown up in the Garden City area of Roanoke and was a 1959 graduate of Jefferson Senior High School. O.W. retired from General Electric after 37 years of service and was known to be able to fix anything and had his own appliance shop in addition to his working at GE. He was a great friend to many and was also known for his calming demeanor. Family meant everything to O.W. and he was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Judith S. Reed. His three children, Carol R. McGuire, Mark W. Reed, and Julie R. Pietrzyk. His 13 grandchildren, Kelly, Nick, Spencer, Katie, Jessica, Jim, Hannah, Solona, Emry, Riley, Benson, Adler and Lane. And 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace (Gene) Reed. He is also survived by his brothers, Earl Reed, Glenn Reed, and Jimmy Reed as well as two sisters, Shirley Reed Pinson and Nancy Reed Flowers. He also had numerous nieces, nephews and many other loving relatives and friends. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at noon on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 in Evergreen Burial Park with the Rev. C. Nelson Harris officiating.
