Surviving is a son, Harry Shorter and wife, Claudie of Whitehall, Md; grandson, Harry Shorter, Jr. of Seven Valleys, Pa; two granddaughters, Cynthia Blevins of Glen Rock, Pa. and Kimberly Shorter of Woodbridge, Va; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Shorter of Seven Valleys, Pa; two stepsons, Marvin Rakes of Raleigh, N.C. and Allen Rakes of Pofftown, N.C; sisters, Hazel Ferris of Floyd, Georgianna Link and husband, Leon of Bristol, Tenn., Bonnie Conner and husband, Arthur of Copper Hill, Velva Davis, Virginia Conner and Iva Morgan, all of Roanoke, Dexter Sowers of Copper Hill; a brother, Woodrow Conner and wife, Reba of Sarasota, Fla; a special niece, Frances Gardner and husband, Olen of Riner; numerous other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday 2 p.m. at Salem Church (Head Of The River) with Rev. Olen Gardner and Elder Lane Carter officiating with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home. Relatives and friends may call anytime Friday at Wood Funeral Home. on November 11, 1999.13

He retired in 1970 after 10 years employment with Wells College, Aurora. He previously had been a farmer. He was the last surviving charter member of the Pine Creek (Va.) Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Effie Conner; two sons, Roy L. of Aurora and Elbert L. of King Ferry; three daughters, Evelyn I. Lusk of Waterloo, Edna I. Samons of Dale City, Va., and Mrs. Donald Wells of Venice Center; three brothers, F. Ray of Freeville, Paul H. of Roanoke, Va., and L. Dalton of Stuartsville, Va; three sisters, Anna P. Kirby and Myrtle I Jernell, both of Roanoke, and Ruby M. Overstreet of Vinton, Va; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Contributions may be made to the Instant Aid Ambulance Fund in Poplar Ridge. on November 16, 1988.5
