He arrived in the division while it was engaged in the important and demanding Mang Thit Campaign. He quickly showed that he was the kind of high caliper, resourceful, petty officer who could be depended upon to perform under the most demanding circumstances. His performance during border interdiction operations on the Vinh Te Canal was especially exemplary and his personal effort significantly contributed to the success of River Division 535. He made 165 combat patrols and engaged the enemy on eight separate occasions.
