John William McCartney DEATH of J. W. McCARTNEY - J. W. McCartney, native of Craig Co. and for many years a merchant in New Castle, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. R. McWane of Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 29, according to a telegram received here by Mrs. W. B. Elmore. He was in his 85th year. Mr. McCartney had been living with his daughter, Mrs. McGill, in Richmond, Va., for the past two years, but had recently gone to Birmingham for the wedding of his grandson, William McWane. He was a Confederate veteran, having served in Anderson's Battery. As a businessman, he was honest in his dealings, and as a citizen had the best interests of the community at heart. For the past few years he had been living with his children in distant parts, but he always retained his love for his native land and its people. His wife preceeded him to the grave a number of years ago, but he is survived by one son, H. W. of Bradenton, Fla., and three daughters: Mrs. W. S. Early of Union, WV, Mrs. Ella McWane and Mrs. Alexander McGill.5 He was born in March, 1841 at Botetourt Co., Virginia.6,1 He married Elzira Virginia "Ella" Elmore, daughter of Elder Andrew Jackson "Andy" Elmore and Elizabeth Murray "Betsy" Walker, on May 30, 1872 at New Castle, Craig Co., Virginia.1,7 John William McCartney died on December 29, 1924 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama, at age 83.4,5

The only person capable of repairing dents and dings in those days was the local blacksmith, and that is where our story begins. Luel Albert Conner was a blacksmith like his father. He was also one of the very first body men in the state of Virginia. He passed the trade on to his sons, one of which was Doug Conner, Sr. Both of Doug's sons also found their way into the trade. Doug, Jr. learned to be a painter working with his father after school. Don learned the craft from Bob Hoag in San Jose, CA. After returning to Richmond, Don teamed with Doug in 1975 to create a body shop where a customer could expect a quality repair for a fair price. Together the two brothers set a standard in the local auto-repair industry. Conner Brothers was one of the very first shops where body men performed their own frame work. Conner Brothers Body Shops have grown to five locations over the years. The most recent of which is the Grove Road shop which opened in January of 1996.9 He was born on March 14, 1890 at Floyd Co., Virginia; His WWII Draft Registration Card has a birth date of Mar 18, 1890.1,2 He married Eula Belle Hodges on April 29, 1914 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.7,10 Luel Alfred Conner died on April 11, 1945 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 55.8,4 He Luel Alfred Conner, 55, died Wednesday night at his home, 1123 Rorer avenue, S.W.
