He was a World War II veteran with the Army Air Force and a Kentucky colonel. He attended Faith Independent Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Mae Rzeczkowski and Thelma Schorman; and five brothers, Earl Ray Simpson, Paul Simpson, Robert Simpson, Charles Simpson and James Simpson. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Anna Belle Barnett Simpson; a daughter, Jacqueline Patrick and her husband, Richard, of Ashland; a son, Michael Simpson and his wife, Karen, of Ashland; a brother, Donald Simpson of Ashland; three grandchildren, Tiffani Johnson, Mick Brown and Richard Patrick II; and five great-grandchildren, Riley Johnson, Sophia Johnson, Zachary Brown, Jacob Brown and Taylor Donahue. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by ministers Edgel Whitt and Larry Mullins. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic service by Poage Masonic Lodge at 7 p.m. and a military service on Tuesday by Kenova American Legion Post 93. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101. on October 12, 2008.4

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Macie Thomas; and brother and sister-in-law, Laurel Edward and Hazel Thomas. He served in the Army as a medic from November 1952 to November 1954 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He also was a long time member of the Little River Baptist Church. He will be missed very much by his loving wife, family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean Yates Thomas; son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan D. and Mary Ellen Harmon; grandson, Josiah Harmon; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Bill) and Marie Thomas; sisters and brothers in-law, Claudine and Chester Sowers, and Barbara and Sheldon Vest; and many nieces and nephews. She worked at Craig Manufacturing and Halmode Industries for many years and retired from the Housekeeping Department at Catawba Hospital. She was a member of the New Castle Christian Church where funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Ernie Johnson on Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery. She was born May 16, 1934, in Simmonsville, VA to Bill and Neva Hutchison Farrier. She married Carlysle D Hypes on September 2, 1955. Preceding her in death are her parents, W.L and Neva Farrier; her husband, CD Hypes; her brother and sister-in-law W. L and Geraldine Farrier, Jr. She is survived by her daughters Carla (Rodney) Williams of the Sinking Creek Valley of Craig Co, VA and Ann (Bryan) Armel of Cody, WY. Her grandchildren Laura Williams, James (Christine) Armel and Sarah Armel and two great grandchildren, Beckett and Myles Armel. Also surviving her are loving nephews and niece and family friends. Harriet graduated from Maywood School in 1951. She received a bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College and a master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Harriet spent 30 years as a teacher and guidance counselor. She taught in the Virginia counties of Washington, Amelia, Rockbridge, and Craig. She was active in her local education associations and a member of the education organization of Delta Kappa Gamma. Harriet loved family and friends. Her hobbies were cooking, sewing, and quilting. She made her daughters’ wedding gowns, and many clothes for her children and grandchildren. Harriet loved travelling and seeing other places in Virginia and the US. In 1979, CD and Harriet returned to their beloved home in the Sinking Creek Valley. She spent 25 years as the pianist for Bethel United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir and taught adult Bible study. Harriet continued as communion steward for Bethel United Methodist Church after her mother, Neva H. Farrier, and her grandmother, Ressie McGuire Farrier. Harriet was a cherished member of her family, friends and community. Her family was blessed by her love and support. She is at peace with her Savior. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, January 30, 2022, at Bethel United Methodist Church with Pastor Charles Stacy officiating. Paxton and wife, Cindy, of New Castle and Mike Paxton, of New Castle; two grandchildren, Jessie Bostic and husband, Eric, of New Castle and Stevie Paxton and wife, Taryn, of Roanoke; one great-grandchild, Landon Pierce Bostic; four brothers, Michael Paxton and wife, Betty, of Boonesmill, Walton Paxton and wife, Joy, of New Castle, Bobby Paxton and wife, Peggy, of Salem, and Glenn Paxton, of New Castle; two sisters, Leona Filkins, of Salem, and Helen Cogsdale, of Roanoke. Mr. Paxton served in the United States Air force from 1950-1954 and retired from General Electric after 33 years of service. He was an active member of the VFW Post #4491 and the New Castle Christian Church. He enjoyed many trips to Canada over the years with friends and family where he loved to fish and hunt. He was also an avid collector of genealogy and published three books. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2012, at Paitsel Funeral Home with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery with military rites performed by VFW Post #4491. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Craig County Rescue Squad or Fire Dept. on December 1, 2012.3
