He was a Virginia State Trooper and a retired special agent with the State Corporation Commission. He was a member of the Marine Corps and served in WWII and Korea. He was a Baptist and a member of the State Police Alumni Association. He is survived by two children, Gary Eugene Switzer, and wife, Deborah, Richardsville, and Mark Crute Switzer and wife, Silvia, Harborton; four grandchildren, Megan Switzer, Dustin Lee, Ryan and Michelle Switzer. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 28, 2001, in Williams Funeral Home, Onancock. on September 1, 2001.²

In addition to these previous settings, Mr. Fortune touched the lives of many children as a caregiver and advocate at Glenwood Mills Home, Cedar Ridge Boys Home in Maryland and Youth Unlimited based in High Point. Mr. Fortune is survived by his wife, Shirley Cadd Fortune, of the home; two sons, Timothy and wife, Lisa of Kernersville, Andrew and wife, Christina of Salisbury; a daughter, Nancy and husband, Thornton of Kernersville; plus four grandchildren, Heather, Hannah, Scott and Drew. A graveside service will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke, Va. on May 9, 2001.¹
