He is survived by his loving wife, Alice Rakes; children, Donna Rakes Akers and husband Todd, Melissa Rakes Craighead and husband, Paul; sister, Linda Hollandsworth; two grandchildren, Jessica and Zachary; two great-grandchildren, Emilie and Brianna; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.Interment will follow in Piedmont Cemetery. on January 26, 2017.2

Fletcher, who built one of the nation's top intramural and recreational sports programs at the University of Virginia, died Monday after returning from his morning run. He was 57. Fletcher was associate director of athletics and executive director of intramural/recreational sports. At least 94 percent of undergraduates participated in programs under Fletcher's watch during his tenure, according to the university. When Fletcher arrived at UVa in 1985, he supervised the university's two indoor recreational facilities and 12 full-time employees. Today, there are four major indoor centers, several outdoor facilities, more than 40 full-time workers and hundreds of part-time student employees. He also was responsible for all athletics facilities and operations at UVa from 1992 until 1997, and then supervised the $86 million expansion of Scott Stadium, completed in 2001. Among other projects he oversaw were the creation of the David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium; completion and lighting of Klockner Stadium; and the creation of the artificial turf competition field and renovated football practice fields at University Hall. Prior to coming to Charlottesville, Fletcher was assistant director of athletics and recreation at the University of Denver from 1981 to 1985. Before that, he was coordinator of intramural sports for the office of campus recreation at the University of Utah. From 1974 to 1976, he was an assistant men's basketball coach at Radford University. Fletcher, a native of Crestline, Ohio, earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and education in 1973 from Heidelberg College in Ohio. He earned a master's degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University. No information on the cause of Fletcher's death was available Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, Gina, and three children, Kristi, Lori and Scott. on June 10, 2009.7
