Mahala Thrash died on December 23, 1907 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 77.1,2,3 She THE DEATH OF MRS. CONNER Mrs. Mahala Conner, wife of Mr. Jonathan Conner, passed away from this earth on the 23rd day of December, 1907. She was the last surviving child of that noble and generous hearted man, Valentine Thrash, who passed away several years ago. Mrs. Conner's only sister, Mrs. Mary A. Sowder, mother of A. T. Sowder, V. M. Sowder, Mrs. J. B. Strickler and other children, preceded Mrs. Conner to the grave some 3 or 4 years ago. She was the mother of six children, Valentine Thrash Conner, Shelton Leak Conner, of Floyd County; Robert Lee Conner, of Roanoke City; Mrs. Manning, widow of Pleasant Manning of Roanoke County; Mrs. Harriet E. Strickler of Danville; Mrs. M. C. King, of Howery, this county. She leaves behind her also 36 or 37 grandchildren, and about 30 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Conner was born July 15, 1830 making her stay on this earth 77 years, 5 months and 8 days. She was married to Jonathan Conner on July 27, 1852. She made a profession of religion many years ago and united herself with the Primitive Baptist Church of which she was a consistent member and always attended her church meetings until her health gave away. She had been a long sufferer and her sufferings had to some extent impaired her mind, but she at all times talked of her Blessed Redeemer. That aged and bowed down in grief husband, Jonathan Conner was always by her side only when he went for medicine and for various doctors. He employed the best of doctors and bought all the medicine that his companion desired. The writer of this lives in the immediate neighborhood and I must here say, within my 61 years of age, I have never known such devotion to his wife as Mr. Jonathan Conner showed to his wife for years. Mr. Conner is now an old man, will be 77 years should he live until April 20, 1908. Now, husband, children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends, do not weep for mother, and grandmother, for she has paid the debt we all must pay and let us hope and believe she is resting now on the Golden Shore. Let us all try to meet her over there. Mrs. Conner was buried at Salem Church on December 25th, in the presence of a large and sorrowing crowd. Her funeral was conducted by Rev. Sumner and Rev. Cole, both preaching able sermons and their sermons were, I thought, very appropriate to the occasion. In other words, nothing could have been added to their sermons. The husband, the children and other relatives have the deepest sympathy of this whole community. on December 27, 1907.2

Joyce Kay Simpson was buried at Restvale Cemetery, 7529 Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.6 She was born on August 6, 1947 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,4,2 She married Philip John Traube III on June 11, 1967 at Blacksburg, Virginia.1,4 As of June 11, 1967,her married name was Traube. Joyce Kay Simpson died on March 10, 2023 at Yakima, Yakima Co., Washington, at age 75.4 She Kay Simpson Traube, August 6, 1947 - March 10, 2023. Kay Simpson Traube passed away on March 10 in Yakima, Washington. Kay was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. Born and raised in Check, Virginia, Kay spent her childhood living in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains, playing in the farmland and around her family's general store. While in college at Radford University, she met and fell in love with Philip John Traube, III, a Marine Cadet studying at Virginia Tech. After marrying in 1967, Kay and Phil embarked on many adventures all over the country. Together they moved over 15 times, and Kay was as comfortable in the small towns of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Keene, New Hampshire, as she was in Chicago and Boston. Kay moved to Yakima in 1996, and loved the many friends she made in her community. Kay had many skills and talents that led her down several career paths. In her early adulthood she was an educator, shoe store owner, and ad executive for multiple magazines. After raising her two daughters she went back to school for a Masters in Social Work from San Diego State University. As many of her peers were wrapping up their careers, she followed her passion into a new field, becoming a respected nursing home administrator who developed dementia units in several facilities. Kay loved fiercely, and she treasured spending time with her husband, daughters, and sons-in-law, and talking on the phone to long distance family and friends. Her favorite thing was spoiling her 3 grandchildren, who all miss their "Kay Kay". She had an artistic soul that shined through in her sense of fashion and beautifully decorated houses. From needlepoint to scrapbooking, Kay loved to create works that evoked precious memories. She most recently wrote a book of memoirs for her family that they treasure. Kay is survived by her husband of 55 years, Phil; her daughters Holly Traube Cordova (Derek Cordova) and Dorian Traube (Steve Hong); her grandchildren Tyler Cordova, Sadie Hong and Caroline Hong; and her siblings Beth Simpson Huddleston, Basil Poff (B.P.) Simpson, Jr. and Willard Charles (Chuck) Simpson, II. She is preceded in death by her parents, Basil Poff Simpson, Sr. and Elizabeth Falls Simpson. on April 5, 2023.4
