He was born Jan. 31, 1882 in Floyd County, Va., a son of the late Samuel and Emmaline Light Shawkey. He came to West Virginia when he was 18 and worked for Loup Creek Colliery Co. at Ingram Branch and Page. He later moved to Fayetteville where he operated a restaurant until 12 years ago. For the past 9 years he lived in Beckley with his daughter Mrs. Hugh Burdette. He was a member of the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church. Additional survivors include Eldredge Shawkey of Oak Hill; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Creger of Mount Hope, Mrs. R. R. Dooley of Fayetteville, and Mrs. Vida Comer of Dobson, North Carolina; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Dodd-Payne Funeral Home in Fayetteville with Rev. Victor Scott officiating. Burial will be in Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today. on August 14, 1974.3
