She was born June 12, 1922, in the Ferrum Community of Franklin County, the youngest of the seven children of Charlie Cassell and Vivian Cannaday Ingram, and was the widow of Francis S. Poindexter. Mrs. Poindexter was widely recognized for her outstanding community service involvement, especially her 43 years in the Extension Homemakers Club during which time she held top offices and received numerous awards. Her career was active, industrious and honorable, culminating in her retirement from Franklin County HIgh School in 1981 after 24 years as dietician and cafeteria manager. She was previously employed by Leggett Department Store, Rocky Mount, and prior to that she served in secretarial capacities to the late Judge W.A. Alexander Sr., Judge Araham Hopkins, and W.D. Peake, principal of the former Rocky Mount High School, where as a student she was especially proud of her basketball career, having played on the 1938-39 championship team. Mrs. Poindexter is survived by her children, Charles Douglas and Janet Beat Poindexter, Seaford, Margaret Danna and James W. Hayes, Glade Hill, Gary Neal and Penny Stoner Poindexter, Glade Hill; two beloved grandchildren, Sherrie Poindexter Mitchell, Rocky Mount, Charles Ashton Poindexter, Roanoke; four stepgrandchildren, Brian Burkley, Washington, D.C., Bruce Burkley, Boston, Ma., Erin Burkley, Reston; Adam Burkley, U.S. Marine Corps, Camp Pendleton, Calif; one sister, Dovie Wimmer, Bluefield, W.Va; one brother, H.B. Ingram, Boones Mill; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Richard Warren Poindexter, Roanoke, Dr. and Mrs. J. Carl Poindexter, Salem; a special friend, Lillian Wilson; special nephew and his wife, Robert G. and Judy K. Poindexter, Summerville, S.C; special cousin, Harold Cannaday, Roanoke; 36 nieces and nephews; a host of great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Betty Daniels-Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in the Poindexter Family Cemetery. Mr. Poindexter was born March 4, 1915, at his family homeplace, Pioneer Acres, in Franklin County, the third son of the late Benjamin Cephus and Betty Scales Poindexter. After receiving his education in the public schools of Franklin County, Mr. Poindexter operated his own lumber business and farm until moving to Tennessee in 1940, where he was employed by the TVA as a heavy equipment machinist during World War II. He returned to Franklin County in 1944 and was well known throughout his life as a farm tractor and equipment mechanic, electrician, and sawyer. He owned and operated Poindexter's Gulf, a garage and radiator business. Mr. Poindexter was active in many civic activities including fund raising during the 1950's for the original construction of Franklin Memorial Hospital, serving as clerk of his voting precinct for 27 years, participating in the local Democratic Party, holding top offices in the Glade Hill Ruritan Club and participating in Sunday School and choir activities at Crafts United Methodist Church. In March of 1993, he was recognized and awarded by the Rocky Mount Lodge #201 A.F. & A.M. for 50 consecutive years of membership association. Mr. Poindexter is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Katie Ingram Poindexter, Glade Hill; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Danna and Jim Hayes, Glade Hill; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Douglas and Janet Beat Poindexter, Seaford, Gary Neal and Penny Stoner Poindexter, Glade Hill; two grandchildren, Sherrie Lynn Poindexter, Glade Hill, Charles Ashton Poindexter, Roanoke; four stepgrandchildren, Brian Burkley, Seaford, Bruce Burkley, Boston, Mass., Erin Burkley, Boulder, Color., and Adam Burkley, Hilo, Hawaii; two brothers, Dr. J.
