     Arno Edwin Spangler Arno Spangler was born in Floyd County, Virginia, near the Family Cemetery. He married Wilmath Jones; the daughter of Plesant (Plez) Jones and Nannie Brooks; in Beckley, West Virginia on 27 May, 1930. Arno changed the date of his birth in the Family Bilble to April 7, 1907 so he could join the army. He served in the U.S. Army from 1927 to May 1937 when he received an honorable discharge. Most of his service time was served at Fort Logan, Colorado. From 1937 to 1940 he worked for a welding shop near Denver, Colorado. In 1940 he and his family moved to Newport News, Virginia where he worked for the Newport News Shipyard until 1963 when he opened his own welding and fabrication business. At the age of sixty five Arno sold the business to his youngest son Michael. He continued to work at the shop until July 1994 when Michael closed the business to accept employment with the State of Virginia. Arno devoted much of his spare time working with Newport News Adult Education and Vo-Tech instructing students in welding practices and metallurgy. Wilmath Jones Spangler was born at Ballard, West Virginia. She had eight sisters and one brother. She is a homemaker who worked for many years with the Leggett Department Stores after her children were old enough to attend school. She was a member of Olivet Christian Church. Mrs. Spangler is survived by her husband of 71 years, Arno E. Spangler; three sons, Michael Roderick Spangler and his wife, Virginia, of Newport News, Connell Dean Spangler and his wife, Jacqueline, of Williamsburg and Ronald "Edwin" Spangler of Earlysville; one sister, Odessa Walters of Pearisburg; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pleasant and Nannie Jones. A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Riverside Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Haywood officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from. 7.to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, at the funeral home.
