She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur W. Heslep Jr., her parents, Hubert T. and Kayoula M. Lawrence, and two sisters, Fannie Mae Webster and Betty Joyce Lawrence. She is survived by her four children, Richard Heslep, Nancy Waddell (Danny), Roger Heslep (Myrteen), and Patricia Hall (Darin); five grandchildren, Mike, Mallory, Brielle, Dylan, and Sarah; and one great-granddaughter, Tyler. Also surviving are her brother, Elwood Lawrence (Helen); and sister, Clara Smith (Crowell), and a special niece and nephew. Arwilda was a long time member of the Lafayette United Methodist Church where she was active in Sunday School and the United Methodist Women. She would sew and make crafts year round for the annual bazaar. She was a working mom who started her career at the Radford Arsenal and continued for many years as a skilled seamstress. She was a kind and gentle person devoted to the care and joy of her family, gardening, and preparing wonderful meals. Her family would like to thank Dr. Karen Barnhart and staff of Carilion Salem Office and Dr. Prokopchak for their loving care. Also, thanks to the staff at Joseph C. Thomas Assisted Living facility for their wonderful care. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. on November 16, 2015.2

Hubert Elwood "Herbert" Lawrence Herbert Elwood Lawrence, Jan 27, 1929 - Nov 11, 2021. Hubert E. Lawrence, 92, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on November 11, 2021. Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A man with a quick wit, a genuine smile and a good joke. Born in Roanoke County, and became a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, living also in Elliston and Riner. He was Preceded in death by parents, Hubert Taylor Lawrence and Kayoula McDaniel Lawrence; and sisters, Betty Joyce Lawrence, Fanny Mae Webster (John), Arwelda Heslep (Junior), and Claire Jean Smith (Crowell). Survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen Howard Lawrence, they were married on October 23, 1954; daughter, Brenda Gale Daugherty (Wayne); son, Jimmy Lynn Lawrence (Peg Morse); nephew, Howard McDaniel (Judy); grandson, Kevin Lynn Fletcher (Kristina); great-grandsons, Evan Fletcher, Conner Fletcher; very dear friends and neighbors, David and Pat Holland, Jeff and Alisha Smith and Lee Vaught, many, many, other friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews, and scores of church brethren. Elwood found the Lord at Glenvar Baptist Church, where he was an active member for twenty- two years. He also attended Auburn Baptist Church, Fellowship Baptist, the first meeting of Fellowship Baptist took place in his living room, and Faith Baptist. He later became a member of Blacksburg First Wesleyan Church where he remained until his passing. Elwood avidly attended services at every Church he attended. He was heartbroken when his health no longer allowed him to attend. Mr. Lawrence started and ran a construction company for fifty years. He gave every customer his best work and a fair price. He built homes, churches, retail stores, factories, parsonages, fellowship halls and even a gymnasium. He spoke with pride of working with Jimmy at The Big Spring Flower mill, representing the third generation of the family to do so. He was busy after his retirement at sixty-two, building three more houses. Elwood also managed the Howard family business for two years, Mountain Beauty brand canned tomatoes. The family also owned the RiverView Mobile Home Park in Lafayette. The family would like send special thanks to the caregivers who took care Elwood in the last days. Tracey, LaDonna and Angie. Crowell T, Smith Jr., 95, of Botetourt, went to be with the Lord, on Sunday, November 21, 2021. Crowell served proudly in the United States Army, serving in World War II and later retiring from the National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Crowell Smith Sr. and Ada S. Smith; wife of 53 years, Clara L. Smith; brother, Andrew W. Smith; and sister, Frances Rosen. He is survived by his nieces, Nancy Waddell and husband, Danny, Brenda Daugherty and husband, Wayne, Patricia Hall, and special niece, Donna Duncan and boyfriend, Bill Beasley; nephews, Richard Heslep, Roger Heslep and wife, Myrteen, and Jimmy Lawrence and wife, Peg; and special caregiver, Susan Cox. A graveside service with military honors, will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park. on November 24, 2021.6
