Together, she and Fred owner and operated Kesler Funeral Home, Henderson, North Carolina, for over thirty years. Fitz was a hard worker, actively employed for seventy-five years. At the time of her death she was a seasonal, registered nurse at Christian Care Center in Henderson, North Carolina. She was a winter resident of Vero Beach for 23 years, residing in Vista Royale. The last four months her residence was at NHC Place due to an ankle injury. She had the most interesting and varied life experiences. She was the administrative assistant to Eleanor Roosevelt's press secretary in Washington, D.C. She graduated in 1932 from The Medical College of Virginia with a degree in nursing. She was an operating room nurse in New York City at Bellevue Hospital. She operated an assisted living facility, The Homestead, in Henderson, North Carolina. She was president of the Henderson Business and Professional Woman's Club, a member of the James White Order of the Eastern Star, a faculty member of the Vance-Granville Community College and a member of the Henderson Country Club. She was a member of the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Henderson and attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach. She was the beloved mother of Patricia and Dan Callahan of Vero Beach, the grandmother of Dr. Samantha Callahan Grist of Atlanta, Georgia, and Patrice Callahan of Nashville, Tennessee. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Kailey Nicole Dietz, Nashville, Tennessee, Thomas Mason Grist, Atlanta, Georgia, and soon to be born Baby Grist. She was the big sister and dear friend to Patricia Dyer, Dayton, Ohio, the loving sister to Charles Aldridge, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Billie Aldridge of Salem, Virginia. A celebration of her life will be October 30th, 6:15pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, Vero Beach, Cannon Lord officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Henderson, NC, 11:00am, November 13th. City Police Captain Walter Cavender and Everett Cunningham, mortician, said It was evident that Mr. Holmes waited until the engine passed and then threw himself under the wheels of the train. The body was completely severed. Mr. Holmes attempted suicide by clashing his wrists and throat on May 9, city police reported, but had apparently recovered and was working as usual last week. He had been in ill health about a year, members of the family said. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ernestine Holmes, and the following children: Robert, Ralph and Keith, all at home; Mrs. John Alcorn of Charleston, Mrs. Donald Schaffer of Morgantown, and Bill Holmes of Santiago, Calif; eight sisters, Mrs. Clint Litton and Mrs. Levi Litton of Charleston; Mrs. O. He attended church at the Kellysville Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey Whitlow; two daughters, Mrs. William (Virginia) Brown and Mrs. Beatrice Turner, both of Rt. 4, Princeton; three sons, Oakie L. Whitlow of Rt. 81, Peterstown, Tony E. Whitlow of Kellysville, Buddy L. Whitlow of Rt. 4, Princeton; one sister, Mrs. Lilly Fain of Rt. 4, Princeton; four brothers, Carl and Robert Whitlow, both of Kellysville, Paul Whitlow of Princeton and the Rev. Arlie Whitlow of Norfolk, Va; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in the Oakvale Cemetery. on January 12, 1978.¹⁰

He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Mrs. Lillie Fain, in March. He is survived by three brothers, Paul Whitlow of Princeton, Robert Whitlow of Kellysville and Rev. Arite Whitlow of Anderson, S.C; and several neices and nephews. Burial will be in Oakvale Cemetery.
