His Social Security Number was 223-48-1560.6 Artis L. Young died on July 4, 1989 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 103.1,6,5 He Funeral services for Artis L. Young, a 103-year-old Copper Hill resident who died Tuesday night, July 4, 1989 in a Salem hospital, have been scheduled for Friday, July 7, at Wood Funeral Home. Young was born in 1886 in Franklin County, but had been a resident of Floyd County for over 90 years. He was a farmer by trade. He was the eldest of nine children. Young suffered major health problems during his lifetime; however, doctors were continually amazed at his physical endurance. He was plagued by emphysema and asthma throughout his life. For about 27 other years he was beset with a variety of ills, including several bouts with pneumonia. When he was 72 years old, he had mumps on both sides. At the age of 80 he suffered a massive stroke. Doctors doubted he would ever recover from the stroke and predicted he would never be anything but a vegetable. After he reached the 90-year mark, Young had two cataract surgeries, a lens transplant---probably one of the oldest men to undergo such an operation, and gall bladder surgery. Three months before his 99th birthday, Young had to undergo brain surgery to remove a blood clot, and although the weeks after the surgery were rough, he had a full recovery. His doctors couldn't explain it. His relatives attributed it to Young's hard work, love of family, and his faith in God. Young was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie T. Young; two sons, Raymond Young and Artis L. Young, Jr; two daughters, Marguerite Young and Ruby Grisso; two grandsons and one great-grandson. Surviving are: four sons, Godfrey Young, Christiansburg, Robert Young, Virginia Beach, Frank Young, Roanoke, Keith Young, Copper Hill; two daughters, Catherine Williams, Nancy Cummings, both of Virginia Beach; 27 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two half-brothers, Murphy Thompson, Floyd, Moyer Thompson, Friendship Manor Nursing Home, Roanoke. Funeral services Friday will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Ingram officiating. Interment in Restvale Cemetery, Copper Hill. on July 6, 1989.5
