     Earl Harvey Reed was buried at Fair View Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave. N.W., Roanoke, Virginia.5,7 He was born on September 24, 1931 at Roanoke, Virginia.4,7 He died on November 9, 1945 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 14.5,6,7 He Earl Harvey Reed, Jr., 14, lost his life after a boat capsized on Roanoke river near his home, 324 Arbutus Avc., S.E. Dr. Charles M. Irvin, city coroner gave the accidental drowning verdict. City Patrolmen G. L. Wills and H. R. Hylton reported that the Reed boy with a friend, Donald Dickerson, 15, was riding in an old wooden boat on the river almost at the rear of his home when the boat capsized. Dickerson told the officers he made futile efforts to save his companion who was unable to swim. He finally, he said, broke Reed's grip, swam to the bank and shouted for help. Doran Vaughan, 14, of 317 Riverland road, heard the shouts and dived into the water making two unsuccessful attempts to locate the body. Life saving crew members were called and succeeded in finding the body a short distance from where the youth had disappeared. It was found about 5:49 in 18 feet of water, 55 minutes after the lad had disappeared. Surviving Reed are his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Reed, Sr. (should be Roscoe Cecil Reed); two brothers and a sister, Cpl. Howard C. Reed in the Pacific area and Herbert Davis Reed and Virginia Gladys reed, Roanoke. Interment will be in Fairview. on November 10, 1945.6
