For 16 years he was circulation manager of the Crawfordsville Journal. He was a veteran. having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Old Union Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge at Alamo, VFW at Crawfordsville and Scottish Rite at Indianapolis. A New Ross native, he was born on March 31, 1895, a son of William L. and Ursula Conner Smiley. He was married to Zola R. Bratton on July 12, 1919. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Robert of Crawfordsville; two sisters Naomi Smiley of Lebanon and Mrs. Helen Martin of New Market; a grandson, Dr. Robert A. Smiley and a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Smiley, both of Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Hunt and Son Funeral Home at Crawfordsville. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Tuesday. on July 30, 1973.

4,1 She Mrs. Mary Frances Swank, age 83, passed away at 10 p.m. Dec. 6 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alice Martin, Wynonna. Okla. Mrs. Swank had been a resident of Dewey for a number of years. One year and seven months ago she went to make her home with her daughter. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Alice Martin, Wynonna, Okla; Mrs. Cora Campbell, Stockton, Calif; Mrs. Nina Leonard, Coffeyville, Kan; Mrs. Hazel Kenny, Tulsa, Okla; one son, Mr. Ezekial Swank, Hooker, Olka; one sister, Mrs. Cora Lempke, Roford, Idaho; 17 grandchildren and 13 grat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 o,clock Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the Hurt Funeral home chapel. Rev. R. C. Kinningham of the Church of Christ officiated. Internment will be in the Dewey cemetery. on December 8, 1947.
