He died Feb. 27, 2008, at his home near Davis City, Iowa. He was a graduate of Jamestown High School in 1934 and lived on a farm near New Ross during his teen years. His parents were James Otis and Valla Willora (Conner) Long, both deceased. After graduation, he went to Wyoming to live. In 1936, he married Alice Mahoney of Alva, Wyo. She died in 2006. They were married 70 years. He taught elementary school for a few years, teaching all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. They bought a ranch near Seely. Later, he became pastor of the Community of Christ Church for the Hulett and Alva, Wyo., area. After retiring in 1984, they moved to Lamoni, Iowa. He kept active, writing books and essays and enjoyed fishing and traveling in the southwest and Wyoming, remaining a devote Christian. He greatly enjoyed his family and friends. Survivors are sons Daniel Long and wife Becky of Lamoni, Iowa, David Long and wife Sherry of Billings, Mont; daughters M. Valora Long of Davis City, Lucille Baxter and husband Larry of Blythesdale, Mo; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews live in different states. Also surviving are two sisters Dorothy Johnson of Crawfordsville, and Donna Shumate and husband Ralph of Lebanon. He also was preceded in death by brothers Wilbert Long and widow Marian of Sundance, Wyo., and Darol Long and wife Dorothy. One son, Marvin Long, died at birth. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa. Burial will be in Alva, Wyo., Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa, Outreach International or the charity of the donor’s choice. on March 21, 2008.2

Survivors include daughters Tona Guinn of Crawfordsville and Donna (husband Gary) Hockett of Waveland; sister Donna (husband Ralph) Shumate, Lebanon; grandchildren James Guinn, Joseph Guinn, Jason Guinn, Carri Wilhite and Chad Hockett; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, husbands James Chesterson and Gerald Johnson, longtime companion John Ames, and brothers Wilbert Long, William Long and Darol Long. Family will greet friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Powers-Priebe Funeral Home, 315 S. Washington St., Crawfordsville. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Ranard officiating. Mrs. Johnson will be cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Cancer Program, c/o VFW Post 1431, 117 N. Water St., Crawfordsville, IN 47933. on March 12, 2010.2

Ralph was born July 26, 1926, in Clarks Hill. He was the son of the now deceased Edgar and Iva Bell (Foster) Shumate. He graduated from Clarks Hill High School in 1944. He then joined the United States Army and served as a medic and corporal in Germany during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. On June 26, 1953, Ralph and Donna M. Long were married in Advance. Mrs. Shumate survives. Ralph was previously married to Dorle Bernhard in 1947, and they had divorced. Ralph was a barber in Lebanon for many years at the Modern Barber Shop. He then finished real estate school and was a real estate salesman with Gene Weber Real Estate in Lebanon for a number of years. In retirement, Ralph enjoyed going to auctions. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and Christian. He loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed getting together with friends at Burger King.Ralph was a member of North Christian Church in Advance and the American Legion in Lebanon. Survivors include his wife, Donna M. Shumate of Lebanon; two daughters, Barb Hendry of Indianapolis and Karen (Shane) Sullivan of Columbus; brother, Clay (Eva) Shumate of West Lafayette; three grandchildren, Brandy Hooton of Greenwood, Shawn (Danice) Rodgers of Noblesville and Shayne Rodgers of Columbus; and five great-grandchildren, Catelyn Hooton, Shelby Hooton, Raegan Hooton, Sydney Rodgers and Jaden Rodgers. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Dale Hetherington officiating. Interment will follow military rites at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6415 Castleway W. Dr., Suite 114, Indianapolis, IN 46250; or to the Garden Baptist Church, P.O. Box 31134, Indianapolis, IN 46231. on November 24, 2011.6
