Viar. Andrew William McCraw, 32, of 5546 Heather Hill Drive, Roanoke, died in Lewis Gale Hospital after being shot three times about 10 p.m. Sunday, Viar said. McCraw was a graduate of Fieldale-Collinsville High School and had lived for two years in Roanoke where he managed a Pizza Hut restaurant on Melrose Avenue. Police have charged Phillip Wayne Repique, 36 of the 2800 block of Greenridge Circle, Northwest, with murder and use of a firearm in connection with a felony in the shooting, Viar said. Repique is being held in Roanoke City jail, and his court date was to be set this morning, Viar added. Viar said McCraw was shot "during an altercation" at the residence of a friend of Ripique's wife on Main Avenue in Northwest Roanoke. on June 16, 1981.9 He Andrew William McCraw, 31, of 5546 Heatherhill Drive, Roanoke, formerly Martinsville, died Sunday night in Roanoke. He was born in Martinsville, Dec. 15, 1949, and graduated from Fieldale Collinsville High School. He attended the School of Art Newport News. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he had been manager the Pizza Hut in Roanoke two years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eadie Franklin McCraw; two daughters, Corey Lynn McCraw and Melissa Kay McCraw of Roanoke; his parents, Reuben McCraw and Mrs. Mollie McCraw Collinsville; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Nannie Byrd Minter Walker Martinsville; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lucy B. McCraw of Rt. 5, Bassett. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. on June 16, 1981.4 He The prosecutor characterized it as cold, calculated murder. The defense called it the actions of an emotionally deteriorated man who sought a cure in drugs and alcohol. To the judge it was the tragic result of an all too typical love triangle. Phillip W. Repique of Roanoke was convicted in October of first-degree murder for killing Andrew McCraw, a 31-year-old Roanoke man who was dating Repique's estranged wife. Repique didn't deny that he did it. He pleaded guilty. And, during a brief hearing Wednesday, Roanoke Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Trabue sentenced the former grocery store employee to 16 years in prison. Trabue told Repique he could have given him life or let him off with just a year. But, Trabue said, it was first-degree murder, and there were "mitigating" circumstances as in so many tragedies that "arise out of a love triangle ...they are tough" to deal with in the courts. According to authorities, Repique shot McCraw three times on the night of June 14 outside a house in the 4000 block of Maine Avenue Northwest. The house was where Repique's estranged wife and his two children had been staying since the couple separated a few months earlier. Repique's brother, Ron, told Trabue his brother had not been able to adjust to the separation. Everything he had done had been for his family and children. "That's all he ever had and what he had worked for." As a result, said Ron Repique, his brother became extremely depressed and began to take excessive amounts of drugs and alcohol. He had to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment on one occasion, the brother said. Taking the stand in his own behalf, Repique told Trabue that he did not plan to kill McCraw. He said he had armed himself with a gun that day because he wanted to go his wife's house and commit suicide. But, he said, when he got there he met McCraw. He said he had known McCraw as a friend before the separation and before he found out McCraw had begun dating his estranged wife. Repique said he began talking to McCraw and asked hi him if he loved his wife. When McCraw responded that he did, Repique said "a fire came up inside my body ... I couldn't catch myself. It just went off. That was it . ... I had no intention of doing that." There was no sudden fire, said Assistant Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Deborah Caldwell. Instead, she said, evidence indicated Repique planned the killing. He got a gun, went to the house and killed the man who had been dating his wife, she said. She urged the judge to impose a 40-year sentence. "Everyone has problems, but society cannot let people try to solve them by killing people," she said. McCraw "had a right to life." Repique will be eligible for parole after serving about one-quarter of the 16-year sentence. on December 10, 1981.10
