J. Hearn, deputy clerk of the United States district court, for his mother, Mrs. Esther Catherine Hearn, 88, widow of James Hearn, who died at 7 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Victoria J. Via, in Green Valley, this county, With whom she had made her home for the past four years. Dr. T. S. Hamilton, pastor of Trinity Methodist church, officiated at the services. Interment followed at Woodlawn cemetery (actually an error corrected in the paper the next day - it should be Oakwood Cemetery). The pallbearers were the grandsons of Mrs. Hearn, while her granddaughters carried the flowers. Mrs. Hearn had been an invalid for the last year, and bedfast during the past month, suffering from paralysis. She suffered a partial stroke ten years ago, but apparently recovered. Again, she was stricken four years ago, but her condition afterward Hearn was born in Montgomery county, Virginia, at a time when of the vast domain embraced by that county. Before marriage she was Miss Esther Catherine Dewese. She came with her parents to Mercer county as a young girl. Upon her marriage February 19, 1861, she moved to Oakvale. Shortly thereafter her husband entered service in the War Between the States and served for the duration of that conflict. Mr. and Mrs. Hearn resided in Oakvale for a number of years and with the exception of a short residence in Kansas, spent the remainder of their lives in Mercer county. Mr. Hearn, who died January 16, 1913, was born in what is now Mercer county during the year 1839 and was perhaps the county's oldest resident. He engaged in the mercantile business during most of his active years. Mrs, Hearn was widely known throughout the county. Among intimates she was known as "Aunt Kit." Since girlhood she had been an active member of the Methodist church and at the time of her passing was a member of the M. E. church of Princeton. A daughter, Mrs. Dora Akers, died four months ago to the day prior to Mrs. Hearn's death. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Victoria J. Via of Green Valley; Andrew J. Hearn, Bluefield and Alonzo G. Hearn, of Princeton. on January 24, 1933.5
