John Mason Anderson was buried at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, 5070 Cove Road N. W., Roanoke, Virginia.2 He was born on April 16, 1946 at Shawsville, Montgomery Co., Virginia.2,3,5 He married Sherry Jane Vest, daughter of Edgar Lee Vest and Minnie "Nora" Clem, on September 6, 1966 at Leaksville, Rockingham Co., North Carolina.1,5 John Mason Anderson married Carolyn Marie "Carol" Goodwin on May 28, 1994 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.2,4 John Mason Anderson died on July 23, 2008 at Bedford Co., Virginia, at age 62.2 He Anderson, John Mason, April 16, 1946 ~ July 23, 2008. He was sweetness and sunshine, this youngest child of the late Robert Bryant and Lula Conner Anderson. He was loving kindness and caring and Dad to Angela, Allen, and Adam Anderson and Granddad to Jarred. Neither dark days, nor harsh people, nor hard work, nor even the war in Vietnam where he was a wounded teenage paratrooper who won a Purple Heart could take away his smile and cheerful disposition. He was helpful and good and generous to old people and little children and animals and anyone in need. He was best friend and husband and sweetheart to Carol Goodwin Anderson, and she stood by him faithfully and laughed with him in the good times and cared for him tenderly through the bad times. He treasured Carol's grown children, Cynthia Marie Dixon, Debbra Lyn Haven, and Timothy Blankenship. He was the best Uncle Johnny to Cindy Ross; Paula, Sandra, Sonny, and Susan Smallwood; Vicki Pris Sears, Edie Sears, Brandy Anderson, and Andee Sears and remembered how to have fun and played board games and war games and Cowboys and Indians with them. He was little brother to Rebecca Sears, Robert Anderson, Lou Lowder, and Vicky Ellett, whose mother said to her, "Take care of your little brother," because she was the oldest child. And Vicky did take care of her baby brother from the cool April morning when he was born in Shawsville to the hot July evening when he died in Bedford County. Cancer took Johnny's life, but it could not touch his sweetness nor dim his sunshine. Our world is sweeter and brighter because he passed through it. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Vinton. The family will receive visitors Friday, July 25, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Lotz Funeral Home, Vinton Chapel and burial with Military Honors will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Johnny's name may be made to the American Cancer Society. on July 25, 2008.2
