During World War II, West served in the Army with the 116th Infantry, 29th Division, that landed with “H” Company on Omaha Beach in the Normandy Invasion of D-Day on June 6, 1944. He received two Bronze Stars. Surviving are his wife, Betty Aaron West of the home; one daughter, Mary West Branch of Bassett; two sons, Robert “Bob” Marvin West of Ridgeway and Stephen Dale West of Axton; one sister, Rosalie West Spraker of Mount Airy, N.C; and four grandchildren.
