In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Alma "Sunny" Ethel Light, brothers, Roy Marvin and James "Jimmy" Wilber Light, and stepfather, T. S. McNeil. He was a loving father, grandfather and brother. He leaves behind to cherish his memory a daughter, Priscilla L. Burgess; grandson, Jonathan Burgess; granddaughter, Jessica Burgess; sister, Mildred L. Johnson; nieces, Carolyn Sue Underwood, Linda Kay Smith, Elizabeth Anne Harris; nephews David Light, Rifton Light, Edward Light; sister-in-law Odell Light; and numerous neighbors and friends. The family would like to express a special thanks to care-givers Linda Earles, Kathy Cruff, Julie Klemm and Frances "Franky" Riggle, and to the wonderful and caring nursing staff of the Veterans Care Center in Salem. He will be long remembered by those who loved him as a faithful Christian, a caring neighbor and an honorable patriot who loved God, family, and country. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

Survivors include three daughters, Debra Tedford of Olathe, Kan., Majhaunta Edgmon of Highlandville, Mo., and Camelia Elliott of Pilot, Va; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mabel Light of Salem, Va., Lois Basham of Christiansburg, Va., and Louise Shank of Roanoke, Va; and a brother, Dr. Maynard "Casey" McNeil of Washington, N.J. on August 4, 2016.2

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Corinne and Allen Atkinson; grandsons, Brad Atkinson and Denee Diluigi, and Robert Atkinson and his wife, Jenny; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Brayden Atkinson; a brother, Maynard "Casey" McNeil and wife, Carol; two sisters, Lois Basham and Louise Shank, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2017 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. Chaplain Seth McCormack will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the funeral home. on September 9, 2017.5

Larry Eenigenburg officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Cemetery, Montgomery County. Friends may call at Oakey's North Chapel where the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday. on July 23, 1990.1
